Self-driving is the most practical and flexible way to access and explore the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Requirements

Valid U.S. Driver'driver's license or International Driving Permit (IDP) back at home country license.
A standard sedan is sufficient for most roads inside of the refuge, that are paved.
Navigation: Download offline maps (Google Maps, AllTrails, or a Physical map). Cell service spotty in refuge.

Road Safety

Wildlife Crossings: Be vigilant for bison, elk, deer, especially at dawn/dusk/night. Drive slowly.
Speed Limits: Observe all the official speed limits. These are often lower within the refuge (e.g., 35 mph).
