Transfer Options from Airports

Self-driving is the most practical and flexible way to access and explore the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Requirements

Valid U.S. Driver'driver's license or International Driving Permit (IDP) with home country license.
A standard sedan is sufficient for most roads within the refuge, that are paved.
Navigation: Download offline maps (Google Maps, AllTrails, or a Physical map). Cell service spotty in refuge.

Road Conditions & Safety

Be prepared for local driving conditions.

Road Safety

Wildlife Crossings: Be vigilant for bison, elk, deer, especially at dawn/dusk/night. Drive slowly.
Speed Limits: Observe all posted speed limits. These are frequently lower within the refuge (e.g., 35 mph).
Congestion: Roads can be busy on weekends and holidays, specifically the main scenic drive to Mount Scott.

LATS routes do not extend to the refuge boundaries or Medicine Park.
