Tainan Taiwan, Taiwan Travel Guide
Tainan Airport (TNN) is a small domestic airport with restricted international flights. Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), about 45-60 minutes south, is the closest major international airport serving numerous Asian routes. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), near Taipei, is the main international gateway, approximately 3-4 hours north by High-Speed Rail (HSR).
Peak Season (October-April) often sees higher prices and limited availability, especially during holidays. Low Season (June-August) may feature lower prices but coincides with typhoon season, potentially causing disruptions. Booking flights 3-6 months in advance generally secures better prices. Consider Dollar Flight Club or Skyscanner for deals.
Buses without transfers operate from Kaohsiung International Airport to Tainan city. A simple and direct option.
Take MRT from KHH to Zuoying HSR Station, then HSR to Tainan HSR. Connect to Tainan Station by local train or taxi.
Airport MRT to Taoyuan HSR, then HSR to Tainan HSR. Connect to Tainan Station.
No specific departure tax applies for air travelers exiting Taiwan; fee typically in airfare.
Arrive at KHH or TPE at least 2-3 hours before international flights; 1-1.5 hours for domestic.
KHH and TPE feature duty-free, restaurants, lounges, currency exchange, and ATMs for departing travelers.
Taiwan's land transport network offers efficient and diverse options. Border crossings are not applicable for this landmass nation. The Taiwan High-Speed Rail (HSR) connects major west coast cities. Tainan HSR Station sits outside the city, with a short TRA line (Shalun Line) linking it to Tainan Station. HSR travel is fast and efficient.
Intercity bus services are thorough and frequently more budget-friendly than HSR, even if they take longer. Major coach operators Kuo-Kuang Motor Transport (國光客運), Ubus (統聯客運), and Aloha Bus (阿羅哈客運) connect Tainan to Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and other major cities.
Urban roads show good quality, but scooter traffic flow is dense. Highways are excellent and well-maintained. Rural road quality is not consistent. The main safety concern involves scooter traffic; drivers must remain vigilant.
Sea and river transportation options to Tainan are limited, mainly serving domestic leisure rather than international arrivals. Tainan does not have international ferry services. Domestic ferries mainly operate from Kaohsiung or other ports, not Tainan.
No specific departure tax applies for air travelers exiting Taiwan; this fee is usually covered in your plane ticket. Arrive at the airport (KHH or TPE) at least 2-3 hours before international flights. For domestic flights, arrive 1-1.5 hours in advance.
HSR and TRA stations provide waiting areas, convenience stores, and food stalls. Currency exchange and ATMs are available at major airports and some large train stations.
Arrive with ample time to complete all pre-flight formalities without rush.
Verify weather forecasts for potential travel disruptions, especially during typhoon season.
Confirm your airport or station transfer route to avoid last-minute delays.
Tainan HSR Station sits in the suburbs. A short local train line (Shalun Line) connects it directly to Tainan Station, located in the heart of the city. Taxis and local buses also service the HSR station, offering direct routes to various Tainan locations.
Tainan Airport (TNN) is closer to downtown than the HSR station. Public buses and taxis are readily available. The airport offers limited domestic and some regional international flights.
For late arrivals or specific needs, pre-booking a cab or private transfer offers peace of mind.
Bus and train schedules may vary on weekends or holidays.
Have small bills for bus fares or initial taxi payments.
