How to Get to Gangneung

Gang Won Do South Korea Travel Guide

Air Travel

Major Airports & Airlines

South Korea's main international gateway is Incheon International Airport (ICN). Gimpo International Airport (GMP) handles domestic and short-haul international flights. Yangyang International Airport (YNY), approximately 40 kilometers north of Gangneung, has limited international and domestic flights, offering the closest air access.

Flight Options

  • Korean Air and Asiana Airlines are flagship international carriers.
  • Numerous other international airlines go by air to ICN.
  • Domestic flights operate to/from GMP and YNY. Check Dollar Flight Club and Skyscanner for deals.

Airport Facilities & Transfers

ICN consistently ranks among the world's best airports. It provides comprehensive duty-free shopping, diverse dining, lounges, transit hotels, medical services, and counters for SIM cards, Wi-Fi egg rentals, and currency exchange. GMP and YNY offer more simple facilities but include convenience shops and cafes.

Transfer Options to Gangneung

  • KTX Train (Recommended): Fastest from ICN/GMP. Direct from ICN to Gangneung Station (2-2.5 hours). From GMP, transfer to KTX at Seoul Station.
  • Express Bus: Express coaches from ICN/GMP to Gangneung Fast Bus Terminal (3-4 hours). A comfortable budget option.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer: The priciest. Direct taxi from ICN to Gangneung costs ₩200,000+.

Flight Price Fluctuations

Flight prices to ICN generally peak over the main holidays: summer (July-August), Lunar New Year, and Korean Thanksgiving (Chuseok). Shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October, avoiding Chuseok) offer better value.

From Yangyang Airport

From YNY, take a local bus or taxi directly to Gangneung city. The journey takes approximately 40-60 minutes, making YNY the quickest airport connection if direct flights are available.

Domestic Travel

Low-low-cost airlines like Jin Air, Jeju Air, T'way Air, Eastar Jet, and Air Busan operate domestic routes within Korea.

Land Transportation

Self-Driving & Road Conditions

Requirements

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for foreign drivers in South Korea, together with your valid driver's license. Obtain the IDP before arrival. DiscoverCars.com for rental options.

Road Network

South Korea boasts excellent, well-maintained roads and highways. Signage often appears in both Korean and The english language. Most highways are toll roads. Rental cars include an electronic toll device (Hi-Pass).

Navigation & Parking

A GPS network with Korean maps (Naver Map or KakaoMap) is necessary. Google Maps' navigation features are limited. Paid parking is common in popular tourist areas.

Sea/River Arrivals

Ferry Services

Gangneung has a port (Gangneung Port), but it mainly handles cargo and domestic ferry services. The main passenger ferry assistance from Gangneung connects to Ulleungdo Island (via Anmok Port Passenger Terminal). This is a multi-hour journey to an island off the east coast, not a means of international arrival.

No International Cruise Port

  • No significant international cruise ships regularly dock here for tourist disembarkation.
  • Gangneung is not a significant international passenger cruise port for tourist arrivals.
  • No significant river transportation options exist for tourists within Gangneung itself or in the capacity of a means of arrival.

Connections to Land Transport

From Anmok Port Passenger Terminal, where the Ulleungdo ferry departs, local buses and taxis provide connections to Gangneung city center and other areas. The port is easy to reach from the city. Immigration procedures at seaports are not applicable for international arrivals, as Gangneung's port does not process international passenger entries.

From Port to City

  • Public buses in the area are available right outside the terminal.
  • Taxis are also readily available at the dock.
  • The port's location offers easy access to city attractions.

Departure Procedures

No separate exit fees or taxes are typically charged to departing passengers at South Korean air terminals or ports. These fees usually figure into the price of your airline voucher or ferry fare.

Timing Recommendations

  • International Flights (ICN, GMP): Arrive at least 2-3 hours before departure.
  • Domestic Flights (YNY, GMP): Arrive 1.5-2 hours before departure.
  • KTX/Bus Station: Arrive 15-30 minutes before departure.

Facilities for Departing Travelers

Incheon International Airport (ICN) offers extensive duty-free shopping, a wide range of restaurants, comfortable lounges, and currency exchange services. You can also process VAT refunds here.

Station Amenities

  • Gimpo (GMP) and Yangyang (YNY) Airports provide convenience retailers and cafes.
  • Gangneung KTX Station & Fast Bus Terminal offer convenience stores, small cafes, and spotless restrooms.
  • Complete check-in, security screening, and immigration procedures.

Important Travel Tips

  • Book purchasing flights in advance, especially for peak periods.
  • Express buses are a comfortable and budget-friendly alternative to KTX.
  • Road signage in South Korea is clear, often in every of Korean and The english language.
  • South Korea shares a land border only with North Korea, not open for tourist crossings.
  • Korean driving style can be assertive; awareness of local habits is important.
  • Speed limits are enforced strictly by cameras.
