Airlink: Direct flights from Johannesburg (JNB), South Africa, to Vilanculos (VFA) are the most common route.
LAM Mozambique Airlines: Flights from Maputo (MPM), Mozambique'the capital, to Vilanculos (VFA).
Qatar Airways: Some high-end lodges arrange seasonal charter flights directly from various international hubs.

Connecting from VFA

To Vilanculos Town: Taxis or pre-arranged transfers from your b&b are available.
To Bazaruto Islands (Boat): Speedboat transfers are the most common and cost-effective method. Lodges arrange these from Vilanculos.

Self-Driving

Option for adventurous travelers from neighboring countries (e.g., South Africa). A 4x4 vehicle is often mandatory due to unpaved or poor roads. An International Driving Permit is needed. Not applicable for islands.

Road Conditions

Vary widely. Main highway (EN1) is equipped with good and poor sections. Rural roads are often sandy. Night driving is not recommended due to poor lighting and livestock. Punctures are common; carry a Repair kit.

Travel by sea is the main means of transport from the mainland to the isles. There are no mass ferry services.

These transfers are typically timed with flight arrivals/departures at VFA.

Sea transfers from the islands arrive at the Vilanculos beachfront.

Onward Travel

Pre-pre-arranged transfers from your mainland accommodation or the airport will meet you there.
Taxis are also found at the beachfront area in Vilanculos.
