Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the main gateway to Playa del Carmen, close TO 45-60 minutes north overland. CUN is one of Mexico's busiest airports with extensive international connectivity. Numerous airlines operate flights to Cancun from main urban centers across North America (e.g., American Airlines, Delta, United, Air Canada), Mexican carriers (e.g., Aeromexico, Volaris), and European carriers (e.g., Ba, Lufthansa, France's National airline). Direct flights simplify travel for numerous international visitors.
Several reliable options for transportation from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen. ADO Bus: Most economical public transport. Comfortable, air-conditioned coaches with luggage lockers. Buses run frequently from all CUN terminals directly to downtown Playa del Carmen. Journey takes 60-75 minutes. Communal Shuttle buses: Cost-effective, but involve multiple stops. Pre-book online. ADO Bus is the dominant and most reliable intercity bus service. It provides comfortable and affordable travel. Frequent routes connect Playa del Carmen to Cancun, Tulum, Merida, and Chetumal. Purchase tickets at terminals or online. Currently, no passenger train services to Playa, but the "Tren Maya" project is under construction.
A current driver's''s driving license from your country of origin and a passport are typically needed. An International Driving Permit is recommended. You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car, with a major credit card for the deposit. Mandatory Mexican third-party liability auto insurance is purchased through the the rental agency. Do not decline this. Highway 307 is well-maintained.
Be watch out for Topes (speed bumps), often poorly marked. Potholes appear on less-trafficked roads. Some local drivers may exhibit aggressive habits. Avoid driving outside major towns at night due to poor lighting and wildlife. Roadside checkpoints by police or military are common and usually routine. Cooperate politely. Strict DUI laws.
Playa serves as a main hub for ferry travel services to nearby Cozumel Island. Two main companies, Ultramar and Winjet, operate frequent passenger services throughout the day. Ferries depart from the main pier at the end of Juarez Avenue, close to Fifth Avenue in downtown Playa. Ferries run approximately every hour from early morning until late evening. The crossing is roughly 45 minutes. Many visitors take the ferry for day trips to Cozumel for underwater diving, snorkeling, or exploring the island's town of San Miguel. Playa itself is not a cruise ship port. Cozumel is a major cruise destination, and passengers from cruise ships there often board the ferry to Playa del Carmen for a day visit to the primary land area. No significant river transportation options in Playa.
Travel between Playa and Cozumel is domestic; no immigration procedures or passport checks are required for these ferry services. For international sea arrivals (e.g., private yachts), standard Mexican immigration and customs procedures apply. Where the ferry leaves from in Playa is centrally located, offering immediate access to various land transportation options. Taxis are available right outside the ship terminal. The main Colectivo stops are within walking distance, providing shared van service. Many hotels, restaurants, and shops on Fifth Avenue are within easy walking distance of the ferry pier.
Mexico's departure tax (DNI) is generally included in your airline ticket price for air travel. Most international airlines include this automatically, so you usually don't pay separately at the airport.
For CUN, allow 60-90 minutes for transfer from Playa del Carmen. Arrive at CUN at least 2-THREE hours prior to international flights for check-in and security.
