Sinai Egypt Travel Guide
Dahab has no metro, tram, or formal city bus system. The town's small size and layout make such systems unnecessary. The main way of public-like transport within Dahab consists of shared pick-up taxis, and private taxis.
Shared pick-up taxis do not follow official routes or have published maps. They operate along the main road connecting various areas. The "Lighthouse" area and the "Mashraba" promenade are points where you can without difficulty find these shared taxis. You can also flag them down anywhere by the main thoroughfare. They travel from the Laguna district in the south, through Mashraba and Lighthouse, and up towards the Assalah village and the bus station. They continue north towards popular dive/snorkel places like the Blue Hole and Three Pools.
Cover the cost of the driver directly in cash (EGP). Prices for common ways through Dahab are generally fixed (30-50 EGP per person).
Shared taxis operate from early morning until late evening (often past midnight), particularly along the main promenade.
Shared pick-up trucks are not wheelchair accessible. Private cabs might be arranged.
Requires IDP. Not widely available in Dahab; usually from SSH. Not generally recommended due to local driving styles.
Available locally. IDP necessary. Higher accident risk due to road conditions.
Available from local shops (50-100 EGP/day) for casual rides. No lanes for specific use.
For the desert safaris, usually part of organized tours; not for independent travel.
Walking and cycling offer excellent ways to experience Dahab's atmosphere. The main promenade (Mashraba and Lighthouse areas) is highly pedestrian-friendly for leisurely walks.
Taxis are readily available. Pre-booking is a good idea for convenience.
Pick-up taxis wait to take you to your accommodation. Agree on the fare before you leave.
Taxis and shared minibuses are available for transfer to Dahab. Bargain for the fare.
Self-driving in Sinai is an option, but it comes with particular factors. Main coastal roads are generally paved and in good condition. Off-road driving in the desert requires a 4x4 vehicle and experience.
