Planning Your Denali Trip

Effective planning spans months. Organize your journey efficiently for a smooth experience.

Chronological Planning Timeline

These steps guide your preparations from early booking to final packing.

1

-6 Months Before

Book Flights & Bus

Secure flights to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) or Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) early for better fares. Reserve Denali Park Bus Tickets via Recreation.gov months in advance; they sell out fast.

Lodging & Tours

Book in-park campgrounds or lodge accommodations early using Recreation.gov or lodge websites. Research and select any special tours like flightseeing or rafting; capacity is limited.

Documents & Insurance

For international visitors: check passport validity (6+ months), apply for an U.S. Visa or an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Processing times vary. Consider travel insurance for medical and trip coverage.

2

-2 Months Before

Itinerary Detail

Outline your daily activities within the park: which trails to hike, which ranger programs to attend, and how long at various viewpoints. This defines your park experience.

Gear & Transport

Review packing list. Acquire required outdoor gear, like a waterproof Rain jacket, sturdy Hiking boots, suitable layers, binoculars, or a daypack. Arrange car rental or train/bus tickets to Denali.

Health Consult

Discuss any recommended vaccinations or health precautions with your healthcare provider.

3

-2 Weeks Before

Confirmations & Downloads

Double-check all your bookings: flights, accommodation, park bus tickets, and tours. Have confirmation numbers ready. Download offline maps and relevant apps; cellular service is limited in the park.

Financial & Packing

Notify banks and credit card companies of travel plans. Finalize packing. Assemble a well-stocked Personal first aid kit with needed medications.

Bear Spray & Contact

Purchase bear spray upon arrival in Alaska; air transport is not allowed. Learn how to use it safely. Inform a trusted contact of your itinerary.

Home Preparation

A few tasks before you leave cultivate peace of mind.

Timing & Confirmations

  • Allow extra time for returning rental cars, checking in for flights/trains.
  • Confirm your departure times and check for any delays or cancellations the day before.
  • Review all aspects of your return trip preparation for a smooth departure.

Leave No Trace

  • Organize your luggage, ensuring all souvenirs and dirty laundry find proper place.
