Land & Sea Journeys

Road Travel

While Doha is an island on a peninsula, land connections serve regional travel. Qatar shares a land border with Saudi Arabia via the Abu Samra crossing, the main land route. Requirements for crossing depend on nationality and visa status for both countries. You will need a valid Saudi visa to enter by land. If driving your vehicle, ensure all documents and insurance cover both countries. Rental cars may have cross-border restrictions. The process involves presenting passports and vehicle documents at checkpoints; it can take time.

Driving in Qatar

  • Requirements: Valid national driving license. If not English/Arabic, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is also needed. Credit card for deposit. Minimum age 21 or 25.
  • Road Conditions: Well-maintained, modern multi-lane highways. Infrastructure supports high-speed driving.
  • Driving Style: Fast-paced traffic, sometimes aggressive habits. Remain attentive. Speed cameras common, traffic laws strictly enforced. Zero tolerance for driving under alcohol influence.

Local Road Travel

Renting a car has flexibility for exploring beyond Doha. Mowasalat (Karwa Public Buses) operates inter-city routes connecting Doha with other towns like Al Khor, Al Ruwais, Mesaieed. These public buses present an economical way to travel domestically. Check Mowasalat website and Karwa Bus app for schedules and routes. There are currently no international train connections to or from Doha. The existing Doha Metro operates only within city limits for intra-city public transport.

Parking & Safety

  • Parking: Generally ample at malls, hotels, major attractions (often free/nominal fee). Older, congested areas like Souq Waqif might have challenging paid parking.
  • Road Safety: High speeds on highways, occasional aggressive road behavior. For desert driving (dune bashing), use experienced travel agencies with proper vehicles. Do not attempt off-road desert driving independently without expertise, equipment, and a convoy.
  • Navigation: GPS apps (Google Maps, Waze) are useful for Doha's complex road network with ongoing construction.

Sea & River Arrivals

Sea arrivals mainly serve cruise passengers.

Cruise & Water Transport

  • Cruise Port: Doha Port (Doha Cruise Terminal) serves international cruise liners when it's cooler season (Nov-Apr). Passengers disembark directly into city center. Temporary entry permits often pre-arranged by cruise line. Taxis and ride-sharing available at port.
  • Ferry Services: No regular international passenger ferry services connecting Doha to other countries. Maritime travel limited to commercial shipping and leisure cruises.
  • River Transportation: Doha has no major rivers, so river transport is not applicable. Traditional dhow boats offer leisure cruises in Doha Bay, not formal transport.

Departure Procedures

  • Exit Fees/Taxes: Generally no specific exit fees directly on departing passengers. Costs usually incorporated into airfare.
  • Timing: Arrive at Hamad International Airport at least 3 hours before scheduled international departure for check-in, baggage, security, and immigration.
  • Airport Facilities: Extensive dining and retail. Numerous lounges. Prayer rooms, family areas, quiet zones. Free Wi-Fi. All for comfortable departure.
