Airport & Airlines

Vilanculos International Airport (VFA) is the main gateway. This small, modern airport handles both domestic and international flights.

Flight Options

  • Airlink: Direct flights from Johannesburg (JNB), South Africa, to Vilanculos (VFA) are the most common route.
  • LAM Mozambique Airlines: Flights from Maputo (MPM), Mozambique's capital, to Vilanculos (VFA).
  • Qatar Airways: Some high-end lodges arrange seasonal charter flights directly from various international hubs.

Transfers to Accommodation

Upon arrival at Vilanculos International Airport, several options help reach your final destination.

Connecting from VFA

  • To Vilanculos Town: Taxis or pre-arranged transfers from your guesthouse are available.
  • To Bazaruto Islands (Boat): Speedboat transfers are the most common and cost-effective method. Lodges arrange these from Vilanculos.
  • To Bazaruto Islands (Helicopter): Offered by high-end lodges, a quicker (5-15 min) and more scenic option directly to the island helipad.

Price Fluctuations

Flight prices are higher during the dry season (June-October) and major holidays.

Airport Services

Vilanculos Airport (VFA) is compact but functional, offering basic facilities like immigration, customs, a small cafe, and car rental desks. Lodge representatives meet guests directly upon arrival.

Connecting Routes

No direct international flights from major global hubs. Connections typically happen through Johannesburg, South Africa, or Maputo, Mozambique.

Land Transportation

Local Bus/Minibus Chapas

Connect Vilanculos to other major Mozambican cities. Very affordable but generally slow, often crowded, and may not maintain strict schedules. Not recommended for comfort or speed.

Self-Driving

Option for adventurous travelers from neighboring countries (e.g., South Africa). A 4x4 vehicle is often mandatory due to unpaved or poor roads. An International Driving Permit is needed. Not applicable for islands.

Road Conditions

Vary widely. Main highway (EN1) has good and poor sections. Rural roads are often sandy. Night driving is not recommended due to poor lighting and livestock. Punctures are common; carry a Repair kit.

Sea/River Arrivals

Island Boat Transfers

Sea travel is the main means of transfer from the mainland to the islands. There are no public ferry services.

Transfer Methods

  • Private boat transfers (speedboats or dhows) arranged by lodges or tour operators are standard.
  • Travel time ranges from 20 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the island.
  • These transfers are typically timed with flight arrivals/departures at VFA.

Connections & Considerations

Sea transfers from the islands arrive at the Vilanculos beachfront.

Onward Travel

  • Pre-arranged transfers from your mainland accommodation or the airport will meet you there.
  • Taxis are also found at the beachfront area in Vilanculos.
  • Strong winds or weather patterns can create rough seas, potentially delaying transfers.

Exit Fees

Mozambique currently has no specific departure taxes upon departure for international flights from Vilanculos; these are typically included in the airline ticket price.

Departure Timing

Arrive at Vilanculos International Airport (VFA) at least 2-3 hours before your international flight. Confirm island transfer schedules with your lodge well in advance.

Airport Facilities

Vilanculos Airport (VFA) offers basic departure facilities, including check-in counters, a waiting area, and a small cafe. Duty-free shopping options are very limited.

Departure Reminder

Planning for your departure from the Bazaruto Archipelago is as important as planning your arrival, supporting a stress-free end to your trip.
