Essaouira The Atlantic Coast, Morocco Travel Guide
Essaouira is highly walkable, especially its medina, where automobiles are generally prohibited. Exploring the old city is best done on foot. Local buses, often managed by M'dina Bus, connect the medina (via main gates like Bab Marrakech or Bab Doukkala) to newer parts of the city, the long sandy beach, and surrounding neighborhoods like Ghazoua or Diabat.
Fares for local buses are low-cost, usually 3 to 7 Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) for a single ride, paid directly to the driver. Buses run from early morning (around 6:00 AM) until late evening (typically 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM). Frequencies vary. Public buses are generally not wheelchair accessible. The medina's cobblestones, small laneways, and numerous steps also pose challenges for mobility.
Maps are sometimes posted but can be confusing. Inquire with locals or accommodation staff for guidance.
Primary hubs are close to Bab Marrakech, Bab Doukkala gates, and the central bus terminal (Gare Routière).
Walking is most good for medina. Buses/taxis for longer distances like beach or Diabat.
Look for "taxi" sign and driver ID.
Insist on meter or agree on fare before ride.
Share location if traveling alone at night.
Available at ESU & bus station. Fixed rates from airport.
For greater independence, especially for exploring beyond Essaouira’s immediate vicinity, rental options are available.
Essaouira's size means no internal tour buses or hop-on-hop-off services. Tours typically originate from Marrakech or larger cities.
Small local fishing vessels can be hired from the port for bay trips. Traditional dhows offer leisure cruises, especially at sunset. Landing on Purpuraires Islands is not allowed.
Limited accessibility services. Medina's cobblestones, stairs, lack of ramps challenge wheelchair users. Newer city parts and modern hotels may offer better accessibility.
Beyond standard options, Essaouira offers a few unique ways to move or experience its coastline.
The entire medina is pedestrianized. Walking is the most efficient and enjoyable method to move around.
Explore on foot
For destinations slightly further afield (e.g., bus station, beach area further south), local buses or petite taxis are convenient.
Ask locals for routes
Grand taxis are ideal for longer distances, like day trips to nearby towns like Sidi Kaouki, or for larger groups.
Consider shared rides
Essaouira's charm is best discovered on foot within the medina. Taxis or buses are available for destinations outside the old city walls.
Choosing the right transport for each journey type optimizes your exploration.
