Public Transportation: Tramway de Casablanca

The Casablanca Tramway is a modern and efficient light train system which contains significantly improved urban mobility. It stands clean, air-conditioned, and typically reliable. The network currently consists of a duo main operational lines, T1 and T2, with extensions and new lines planned.

Detailed route maps are available at tram stops and online. Interchange points allow transfers between lines. Important hubs include Casa-Voyageurs (for train connections), Place Mohammed V, and United Nations Square (central city points).

Ticketing & Fares

  • Purchase tickets from automated machines at all tram stop (accepts coins and some banknotes).
  • For multiple journeys, consider purchasing a rechargeable "Carte Ikhlas" card.
  • A single journey typically costs about 6 MAD. Day passes offer better value (10-15 MAD).
  • Trams operate from 05:00-06:MIDNIGHT to 22:00-23:00, with frequency every 5-10 mins (peak) or 15-20 mins (off-peak).

Validate Your Ticket

Always validate your ticket by tapping it on the reader inside the tramway. Fines apply for non-validation.

Check Maps

Study the trolley map before you set off. Google Maps often integrates tram routes.

Bus System Overview
  • Casablanca has a comprehensive system of public buses run by M'dina Bus.
  • Buses cover locations not served by the tramway, reaching into residential and local districts.

Ticketing & Tips
  • Pay cash directly to the conductor upon boarding. Fares are inexpensive (5-10 MAD).
  • Buses can become very crowded, especially during rush hour. Be mindful of pickpockets.
  • Buses are generally not as accessible as the light rail for mobility challenges.

Petit Taxis Small Taxis

  • Identification: Small, red cars (Dacia Logan or equivalent) with a "Taxi" roof sign and a meter.
  • Capacity: Max 3 passengers. Operate strictly within Casablanca city limits.
  • Hailing: Wave on the street or find at designated stands.
  • Fares: Require the meter ("compteur"). Day rates around 1.7 MAD/km. Night rates (after 8 PM) are 50% higher. Only cash.

Grand Taxis Large Taxis

  • Identification: Larger, typically cream-colored Mercedes sedans. No meters.
  • Capacity: Carry up to 6 passengers. Used for longer distances (airport, intercity) or private charter.
  • Hailing: Found at specific ranks or by negotiation on the street for private charter.
  • Fares: Always negotiated and agreed upon before the ride begins. Be firm but polite. Cash only.

Ride-Sharing Apps

  • Careem: Popular ride-hailing app. Fixed prices displayed, GPS tracking, cash/card payment.
  • InDriver: Propose your fare, drivers accept/counter/decline. Offers competitive pricing.
  • Both apps are lively and offer a convenient alternative to hailing traditional taxis for transparent pricing.
  • Safety: Verify driver's name, license plate, vehicle model against app information before entering.
  • Share trip details with a trusted friend or family member.
  • Airport/Station: Grand taxis are common choice for direct transfers from CMN. For stations, both petit and grand taxis are available.

Rental Options & Walking/Cycling

Car Rental

Requires valid national driver's license, IDP, 21 or OLDER (sometimes 25), and major credit card for deposit. International brands like Avis, Hertz, Europcar operate.

Walking Friendly Areas

Corniche (Ain Diab), Hassan II Mosque surroundings, Habous Quarter (New Medina), city center boulevards (Place Mohammed V, UN Square), and the Old Medina (with caution).

Cycling & Special Transport

Limited dedicated bicycle lanes. Cycling generally not recommended for informal tourists as a result of traffic congestion. No unique local transport like cable cars or boat taxis.

The Casablanca Tramway is for the most part accessible. Many places of historical interest and of a greater age areas may be challenging due to uneven surfaces.
