Two major airports serve the region, each with different flight profiles for convenient access to various coastal areas.

Coastal Gateways

  • Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM): Serves Puerto Escondido and nearby Mazunte, Zipolite, San Agustinillo. Mainly domestic flights.
  • Bahías de Huatulco International Airport (HUX): Serves Huatulco and its bays. Receives more international direct flights, especially during peak season.
  • PXM is convenient for the central/western coast; HUX for the eastern side.

  • Domestic: Aeroméxico, VivaAerobus, Volaris offer frequent flights from Mexico City (MEX) to PXM and HUX.
  • International (HUX Seasonal): Direct flights from US/Canada (e.g., Dallas, Houston, Toronto, Vancouver) mainly during winter high season via American, United, Delta, WestJet, Air Canada, Sunwing.
  • Mexico City (MEX) to PXM/HUX is the most frequent and reliable connection (1-1.5 hours flight).

Flight Price Fluctuations

Prices are higher during peak high season (mid-Dec to Jan, Easter week). Lower during rainy season (June-Oct). Book well in advance for best rates.

Airport Facilities

PXM has basic facilities (car rentals, taxis, colectivos). HUX is more developed with shops, cafes, car rentals, ATMs. Always carry some local currency.

Airport Transfers

Taxis and shared vans (colectivos) are available from PXM. HUX offers taxis, pre-paid shuttles, and rental cars. Confirm fixed fares before boarding.

Sea transportation on the Oaxaca Coast is specific and not generally used for inter-town passenger travel.

Coastal Water Travel

  • Cruise Ports: Huatulco has a dedicated cruise ship port at Santa Cruz, receiving international liners seasonally.
  • Ferry Services: No public ferry services for passenger transport between towns along the Oaxaca Coast.
  • Immigration: Cruise passengers in Huatulco usually get streamlined temporary shore passes.

River Transportation

River transport is limited to localized small boat tours for specific purposes, offering unique ecological explorations.

Lagoon & Coastal Tours

  • Lagoon Tours: Small boats explore the intricate lagoon systems of Chacahua, Manialtepec (bioluminescence), and Ventanilla.

  • Relevant border crossings (e.g., with Guatemala to the south, or the U.S. To the north) are far from the Oaxaca Coast.

Train Services

Currently, there are no passenger train services connecting directly to the Oaxaca Coast.
