Two main airports serve the Oaxaca coast near Mazunte. Puerto Escondido International Airport (PMX) is typically the most convenient, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours drive. Huatulco International Airport (HUX) is also 1.5 to 2 hours drive, offering more international connections.
Both PMX and HUX are relatively small airports with basic facilities: ATMs, car rental desks, and taxi stands. Food options are limited. Wi-Fi availability can be inconsistent.

Car rentals are available at PMX and HUX airports, and in Puerto Escondido town. Major international companies are present. A valid driver's license from your home country is needed. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended. Compare prices on Kayak car rental.
Mexico requires third-party liability insurance. Ensure your rental includes this or purchase it separately. Additional insurance for collision or theft is highly recommended. Check your credit card benefits for rental car insurance.
Highway 200 is generally paved. The route from Oaxaca City (Highway 175) is very winding. Unpaved roads and potholes are common in rural and village areas. "Topes" (speed bumps) are common and often poorly marked. Drive slowly. Avoid driving at night on rural roads due to poor lighting and animals.
For air travel, the FMM departure tax is typically included in your international airline ticket. This means no separate payment is needed upon departure. If you entered Mexico by land and paid the FMM fee separately, ensure you keep the stamped portion of your FMM to present upon departure, along with proof of payment.
For bus travel, arrive at the Pochutla bus terminal at least 30-45 minutes before your scheduled bus departure. This allows time to find your gate, check luggage, and purchase snacks.
Rental options are limited in Mazunte itself. More commonly found in Puerto Escondido or Zipolite. Inspect the vehicle thoroughly before renting, checking for damage and working lights/brakes.
Some accommodations or small local shops in Mazunte may offer bicycle rentals. Inquire locally if you are interested in cycling around the village or to nearby San Agustinillo.
The main form of local public transport in Mazunte and the surrounding coastal towns is the "colectivo." These are shared pick-up trucks with benches in the back, often covered for shade. They operate on fixed routes between towns, are painted distinctive local colors, and run frequently and affordably.
Colectivos generally run from early morning (around 6:00 AM) until early evening (around 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM). They are frequent during the day, usually every 5-15 minutes on the main route. Frequency decreases after dark; a taxi is a better option if out late.
Mazunte is highly walkable within its village and to main beaches (Playa Rinconcito, Playa Mazunte). Punta Cometa is a popular walking route (20-30 minutes uphill, uneven path).
No dedicated bicycle lanes. Cycling is possible on local roads and Highway 200 shoulders, but be cautious of traffic.
Avoid walking or cycling alone on unlit, secluded paths at night, especially to Mermejita Beach. These areas can be very dark and isolated. Stick to well-lit areas or use a taxi after dark.
Taxis offer a direct and convenient transport option, especially for shorter distances or late-night travel. Licensed taxis are typically white or have specific markings. They operate from "sitios" (taxi stands) or cruise.
Uber, Didi, or similar ride-sharing apps are generally not available or widely used in Mazunte and the immediate coastal area. Taxis and colectivos are the main options. Do not rely on ride-sharing apps here.
Small fishing boats (lanchas) offer short rides between beaches (e.g., from Rinconcito to Mermejita). Lanchas are also used for various ocean tours (dolphin/whale watching, snorkeling, coastal exploration), typically departing from Rinconcito Beach or San Agustinillo.
No other specialized public transport like cable cars, funiculars, or jeepneys are specific to Mazunte. The region relies on colectivos and taxis for most transit needs.
Public transportation (colectivos) is not accessible for travelers with mobility challenges. Private taxis or pre-arranged private transfers are the best options, though even these might face challenges on Mazunte's unpaved and hilly roads.
