Getting Around Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo Central Pacific Coast, Mexico Travel Guide

Public Transportation

Zihuatanejo's public transportation system is both economical and practical, mainly consisting of local buses and shared vans.

The town does not have extensive public transit systems like a metro or tram. Its main public transportation methods include local buses (Camionetas or Micros), which are larger vans or small buses operating on fixed routes, and Colectivos (Shared Vans), which are smaller passenger vans also running on specific routes.

Routes and Fares

  • Buses connect Zihuatanejo Centro with various neighborhoods, including Playa La Ropa, Playa Madera, and extend up to the Ixtapa area.
  • Colectivo routes are marked on windshields. A common route runs frequently between Zihuatanejo Centro and Ixtapa, found near Mercado Central.
  • Fares for both buses and colectivos are paid in cash directly to the driver upon boarding. They are inexpensive, typically a flat rate.
  • Operate frequently during daylight hours (approx. 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM). Frequency decreases in late evening.

Navigating Tips

Ask locals or drivers for route guidance. Have small change ready. Flag down buses/colectivos to board, and say "¡Baja!" or "¡Aquí, por favor!" to exit.

Accessibility

Public buses and colectivos are generally not wheelchair accessible due to high steps and lack of dedicated space. Taxis are a more suitable option for travelers with mobility challenges.

Cost-Effective Travel

Using public transportation is a very inexpensive way to travel within Zihuatanejo and to Ixtapa, offering significant savings compared to taxis.

Taxis and Ride-Sharing

Licensed Taxi Information
  • Licensed taxis are usually white with yellow or blue stripes and display an official taxi number.
  • Taxis can be hailed on the street, found at designated stands (sitios), or called through your hotel.
  • Fares are often fixed for common routes; confirm the fare with the driver before getting in. Cash (Mexican Pesos) is the main payment method.
Ride-Sharing & Safety
  • Uber and Didi operate in Zihuatanejo, but their availability and reliability can be inconsistent compared to larger cities. Traditional taxis are often more prevalent.
  • Use official, licensed taxis. Consider using taxis from hotel stands or calling one through your accommodation.
  • Avoid getting into taxis with multiple strangers already inside. At ZIH Airport, purchase pre-paid taxi vouchers from authorized booths.

Car Rental

Requires valid driver's license, IDP (recommended), credit card for deposit, and mandatory Mexican auto insurance.

No formal sharing program. Some hotels/shops offer rentals, especially for Ixtapa's "Ciclovia."

Driving Laws

Walking and Cycling

Walking and cycling offer intimate ways to experience Zihuatanejo's charm and natural beauty, especially around the bay.

Pedestrian-Friendly Areas

  • Zihuatanejo Centro: Highly walkable with lively streets and pedestrian zones.
  • Paseo del Pescador: A charming waterfront promenade along the bay, connecting the main pier to Playa Madera.
  • Playa La Ropa and Playa Madera: Connected by easily walkable paths and streets, suitable for strolling.
  • Scenic Walks: The paved pathway from Playa Madera towards Playa La Ropa offers beautiful coastal views.

Cycling & Safety

  • Bicycle Infrastructure: Limited dedicated bicycle lanes in Zihuatanejo itself. The "Ciclovia" in Ixtapa is a safe, paved cycling path.
  • Road Cycling: Can be challenging in Zihuatanejo due to traffic, uneven surfaces, and "topes." Exercise caution.
  • No-Go Areas: Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially after dark. Avoid walking or cycling on main roads without designated areas at night.
  • Self-guided walks are easy and enjoyable in Zihuatanejo's core areas. Inquire locally for cultural walking tours.

Specialized Transportation

Tour Buses

Large tour buses or hop-on-hop-off services are not common. Most organized tours use smaller vans or minibuses for group excursions.

Boat Taxis

Water taxis ("lanchas") are a popular way to reach beaches like Playa Las Gatas (from Zihuatanejo pier) or Isla Ixtapa (from Playa Linda).

Unique Transport

Zihuatanejo does not have cable cars or funiculars. Main transport modes are traditional roads and water taxis.

Accessibility Services

General Limitations
  • Accessibility for travelers with mobility needs is generally limited.
  • Public transport (buses, colectivos) is not accessible for wheelchairs.
  • Sidewalks can be uneven, and ramps are not consistently available, making independent navigation challenging.
Finding Accessible Options
  • Some newer or larger hotels, notably in Ixtapa, may offer accessible rooms and facilities.
  • Contact specific hotels or tour operators directly in advance to inquire about accessibility features.
  • Taxis may be an option if foldable wheelchairs can be accommodated; confirm with the driver.
