Southern Laos Laos Travel Guide
This is the principal airport serving Pakse and all of the south of Laos. It is a small but functional airport handling both domestic and not many international flights. Lao Airlines, the national carrier, operates domestic flights to Vientiane (VTE) and Luang Prabang (LPQ). Internationally, Lao Airlines connects Pakse directly to Bangkok (BKK/DMK) in Thailand, Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) in Vietnam, and Siem Reap (REP) in Cambodia.
No direct flights exist from major global hubs outside Southeast Asia. Travelers from Europe, North America, or Australia link through major Southeast Asian transit hubs like Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, or Vientiane. Thai Airways/Thai Lion Air/Nok Air offer an alternative route: fly from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani (UBP) in Thailand, then transfer overland across the Chong Mek/Vang Tao border to Pakse. This course sometimes possesses more flight flexibility. Flight frequency to Pakse may increase during high tourist season (Nov-Feb). Prices generally increase during peak times. Booking 2-THREE months prior is advisable. Transfer from PKZ to city: Tuk-tuks are readily available (LAK 30,000-50,000 to city center). A few hotels offer pre-arranged pick-up.

Pakse is on the Mekong river river River, a major waterway. While not a cruise port in the traditional sense, some river vessel services exist for trips between nearby small communities or for reaching parts of Si Phan Don. Local slow boat trips along the Mekong are possible, especially for connecting to nearby towns like Champasak or for accessing specific islands within Si Phan Don. These are more for area transit or short excursions.
Immigration procedures at seaports are not applicable for Pakse as there are no international seaports. River crossings usually involve land-based the process of immigrationes at official border points. For example, crossing from Cambodia into Laos via the Mekong river in Si Phan Don involves a border post on land. River vessel landings in Pakse are typically not far from the city center, offering easy access to tuk-tuks, songthaews, and guesthouses. This facilitates convenient transitions between river and land travel.
