Manas International Airport (FRU) is the main international airport for Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan, located about 25 km (16 miles) north of downtown. All foreign flights arrive here. Major airlines include Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Aeroflot, S7 Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways, FlyDubai, China Southern Airlines, and Wizz Air. Avia Traffic Company is the main domestic carrier, flying to Osh.

Border Crossings

Kyrgyzstan shares land borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and China. The most used crossing near Bishkek is Kordai/Ak Jol with Kazakhstan, generally straightforward for visa-free nationalities. Marshrutkas and ride-sharing taxis operate between Bishkek and Almaty. Crossings to Uzbekistan (Dostuk/Dustlik near Osh) are used. Tajikistan crossings (Pamir Highway) often require special permits obtained in advance. China crossings (Torugart Pass, Irkeshtam Pass) generally are not for independent travelers, needing pre-booked transportation and permits.

Train & Bus Travel

Main roads are usually paved, but some sections are rough. Mountain roads are often unpaved and challenging. A 4x4 or SUV is for mountainous areas. Livestock frequently roam roads; drive cautiously. Marshrutka Departures

Marshrutkas operate on fixed routes. Find route numbers on front windows. They pull over anywhere along the route for pick-up/drop-off. They are fast, frequent, and inexpensive. They are the backbone of the city movement for locals. Buses and trolleybuses operate on not as many frequent but fixed routes.

Bus Station Details

  • Western Bus Station (Zapadny Avtovokzal) for western Kyrgyzstan routes.
  • Eastern Bus Station (Vostochny Avtovokzal) for eastern Kyrgyzstan routes (Issyk-Kul region).
  • Fares are affordable, but vehicles can get packed.

Payment & Navigation

The fare for marshrutkas is 15 KGS. Trolleybuses and regular buses cost 11 KGS. Payment must be always in cash. Have small denominations ready, as drivers might not always have change. No paper admission or passes are for single rides. You cover the price of the driver. Marshrutkas generally operate starting AT 6:O'CLOCK IN the MORNING to 9:00 PM and are very frequent.
