Kyrgyzstan shares land borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and China. The most used crossing near Bishkek is Kordai/Ak Jol with Kazakhstan, generally straightforward for visa-free nationalities. Marshrutkas and shared taxis operate between Bishkek and Almaty. Crossings to Uzbekistan (Dostuk/Dustlik near Osh) are used. Tajikistan crossings (Pamir Highway) often require special permits obtained in advance. China crossings (Torugart Pass, Irkeshtam Pass) generally are not for independent travelers, needing pre-arranged transport and permits.
To rent and drive a car, you typically need a valid driver's license and an International Driving Permit (IDP). Road conditions vary. Main roads are generally paved, but some sections are rough. Mountain roads are often unpaved and challenging. A 4x4 or SUV is for mountainous areas. Livestock frequently roam roads; drive cautiously. Avoid night driving in rural/mountain areas.
Marshrutkas depart from various bus stations in Bishkek. The Western Bus Station (Zapadny Avtovokzal) serves routes to western Kyrgyzstan (e.g., Osh). The Eastern Bus Station (Vostochny Avtovokzal) serves routes to eastern Kyrgyzstan (e.g., Issyk-Kul region). Fares are inexpensive, but vehicles can be crowded. Shared taxis depart when full from bus stations or designated taxi stands.
Sea or river arrivals are not applicable for Bishkek. The city is landlocked and not on a major navigable body of water. Water transportation within Kyrgyzstan is mainly for recreational use on Issyk-Kul Lake, several hours drive from Bishkek. No navigable rivers connect Bishkek to other countries or major bodies of water that support sea or river arrivals.
Preparing for your departure from Bishkek is as important as planning your arrival. A smooth exit leaves a positive lasting impression. No specific exit fees or taxes are typically levied at Manas International Airport (FRU) for departing passengers. Any departure taxes are usually included in the airfare price. Arrive at Manas International Airport at least 2-3 hours before your scheduled international flight departure. This allows ample time for check-in, baggage drop, security screening, and immigration procedures. For domestic flights to Osh, 1.5-2 hours is sufficient.
For departing travelers, Manas Airport (FRU) offers duty-free shops where souvenirs, local products, and international goods are available. Several cafes and restaurants offer food and drinks. Currency exchange services and ATMs are also available airside and landside. If departing Bishkek by long-distance marshrutka or shared taxi, the bus stations (Western or Eastern) offer basic facilities, including small kiosks selling snacks, drinks, and public restrooms.
Confirm flight or bus schedule the day before departure.
Account for traffic and potential delays.
Keep passport, boarding pass, and any other needed documents ready.
Marshrutkas operate on fixed routes. Find route numbers on front windows. They pull over anywhere along the route for pick-up/drop-off. They are fast, frequent, and inexpensive. They are the backbone of city movement for locals. Buses and trolleybuses operate on less frequent but fixed routes.
The fare for marshrutkas is 15 KGS. Trolleybuses and regular buses cost 11 KGS. Payment is always in cash. Have small denominations ready, as drivers may not always have change. No paper tickets or passes are for single rides. You pay the driver. Marshrutkas generally operate from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM and are very frequent.
Official taxis have yellow roof lights or "TAXI" signs. Many private cars also operate. Negotiate fare Before boarding if hailing on the street.
