Getting Around Fiesole

Fiesole Tuscany, Italy Travel Guide

Public Transportation

The ATAF (Azienda Trasporti dell'Area Fiorentina) bus system connects Fiesole to Florence. This bus service is reliable and frequently used by both locals and tourists. Florence's public transport consists of buses (also ATAF) and two tram lines (Tramvia). Florence does not have a metro system. Buses cover most ways through the city and to nearby towns like Fiesole.

The Bus #7 is the most important route for Fiesole visitors. It runs regularly between Florence's Piazza San Marco and Fiesole's Piazza Mino da Fiesole. The bus route offers panoramic views of Florence as it ascends the hill, making the journey itself an element of the experience. Florence's major hubs are Piazza San Marco (for Fiesole bus) and Santa Maria Novella (SMN) train station (bus and tram hub).

Tickets & Hours

  • Tickets: Single-ride tickets cost €1.50 (pre-purchased at "tabaccherie", newsstands, or ATAF machines). On-board purchase is €1.70. Valid for 90 minutes from validation.
  • Validation: You need to validate your ticket immediately upon boarding using the yellow machines. Failure to validate can result in fines.
  • Digital Tickets: The "ATAF & Li-nea" app allows purchase and validation of digital tickets.
  • Hours & Frequency: Bus #7 runs from early morning (~5:30 AM) until late evening/midnight (~12:30 AM). Frequency is every 15-20 minutes during peak hours, less frequent off-peak/Sundays/holidays.

Accessibility

Newer ATAF buses may feature ramps for wheelchair access. Fiesole's hilly terrain could be challenging for those with mobility issues.

Safety Tips

Be aware of pickpockets on crowded buses, especially on the #7 route. Keep valuables secure.
