Things to Do in Amalfi

Amalfi Campania, Italy Travel Guide

Outdoor Adventures

Explore by land and sea.

Hiking & Trekking Routes

Path of the Gods Sentiero degli Dei

This is the most famous and rewarding hike. It has incredible coastal views from high above. The trail from Bomerano (Agerola) to Nocelle (above Positano) is approximately 3-4 hours with moderate difficulty. Sturdy hiking shoes are appropriate, and bring plenty of water. The panoramic vistas make every step worthwhile.

Valle delle Ferriere

An easier and shadier hike behind Amalfi. This trail leads to waterfalls and the ruins of old paper mills. It creates a lush, green escape from the coastal sun.

Monte Solaro Capri

While not directly on the Amalfi Coast, a day trip to Capri makes this adventure possible. Take the chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro for breathtaking panoramic views of Capri, the Bay of Naples, and the distant Amalfi Coast.

Water Sports & Activities

  • Kayaking/Canoeing: Rent kayaks from various beaches (e.g., Positano, Amalfi) for exploring hidden coves, secluded beaches, and sea grottoes at your own pace. A waterproof dry bag for electronics is highly recommended.
  • Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): This activity is increasingly popular. Rentals are available in many coastal towns, a relaxing way to paddle along the calm morning waters.
  • Snorkeling/Diving: The clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea have good visibility for snorkeling around rocky areas and small coves. Diving centers are discoverable in some towns.
  • Swimming: Enjoy the numerous beaches and the clear, inviting waters. Many beaches have lidos where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas.

Adventure Sports

  • While not an extreme sports hub, some local operators present activities like cliff jumping (from safe points during organized boat tours).
  • Coasteering is an option for the more adventurous.
  • These are typically part of guided excursions.

Cycling Routes

  • Road cycling on the Amalfi Drive is extremely challenging due to heavy traffic, narrow roads, and steep climbs.
  • It is suitable only for very experienced and confident cyclists.
  • Mountain biking trails are limited.

Scooter Exploration

  • Scooter rental is a more common and popular two-wheel option for navigating the coast's roads.
  • It offers flexibility and a sense of freedom for exploring.
  • Rentals are available in many towns along the coast.
  • Experience the winding roads at your own pace.

Safety Note for Outdoor Activities

Always assess your fitness level before attempting challenging hikes. For water sports, be aware of local conditions and currents. Wear appropriate safety gear for all activities.

Cultural Immersion

Engage with the local culture through hands-on experiences and traditional performances.

Workshops & Classes

  • Cooking Classes: Learn to make traditional Italian dishes like fresh pasta, Neapolitan pizza, or local lemon-based desserts. Many hotels and specialized culinary schools hold these, usually including a meal of the dishes you prepare.
  • Ceramic Painting: Workshops where you can paint your own piece of local ceramic art, often discoverable in towns like Vietri sul Mare, renowned for its ceramics.
  • Limoncello Making: Learn the process of making the famous liqueur from local lemons, often including a tasting.

Cultural Performances & Community

Ravello Festival

An internationally renowned summer music and arts festival held in the stunning gardens of Villa Rufolo. It features classical music, jazz, and dance performances, attracting world-class artists. A must-attend if your trip coincides.

Religious Processions

If your visit aligns with a local saint day celebration, you might witness religious processions that feature parades, traditional music, and local customs. These events display a glimpse into the region's strong religious traditions.

Community-Based Tourism

Some agriturismo stays in the hills above the coast present opportunities to engage with local farming practices, like olive harvesting or grape picking (seasonally).

Performance Arts

The Ravello Festival is the main cultural performance highlight, presenting high-quality music and arts performances during the summer months. Beyond this, traditional theater options are limited.

Language Learning

For those interested in a dive, short Italian language courses are available in larger regional towns like Sorrento or Salerno, giving a basis for communication.

Cultural Festivals & Events

Throughout the year, various towns host local food festivals (sagre) celebrating seasonal produce (e.g., fish, lemons, chestnuts) or patron saints. Check local tourism boards for specific dates and details.

Relaxation & Wellness

The Amalfi Coast holds opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation, from luxurious spas to natural thermal springs.

Spas & Hot Springs

  • Spa and Wellness Center Recommendations: Many luxury hotels in Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi present high-end spa facilities. These centers have a range of treatments, including massages, facials, and hydrotherapy, often with stunning sea views.
  • Hot Springs and Natural Therapy Options: While not on the immediate Amalfi Coast, the nearby island of Ischia is famous for its natural thermal hot springs and extensive spa parks. A day trip or longer stay on Ischia is a popular choice for wellness and relaxation.

Yoga, Meditation & Beach Clubs

Yoga & Meditation Retreats

A growing number of specialized retreats and workshops are offered in tranquil settings, notably in the quieter, elevated towns like Ravello or at agriturismo properties, focusing on well-being and mindfulness.

Beach & Pool Clubs

Many beaches have lidos (beach clubs) where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas for a relaxing day by the sea. Many luxury hotels also have their own exclusive pool clubs, with a serene environment for swimming and sunbathing.

Wellness Approach

Focus on Serenity

Embrace the tranquil environment for mental and physical rejuvenation. The region's peaceful corners are perfect for unwinding.

Natural Relaxation

The beautiful coastal views and crisp sea air contribute to natural relaxation. Spend time enjoying the scenery.

Mindful Moments

Seek out quiet spots for contemplation and enjoying the scenery, allowing for a connection with the surroundings.

Entertainment & Nightlife

The Amalfi Coast's nightlife is generally more subdued and sophisticated compared to major cities, focusing on beautiful views and local charm.

Live Music & Theater

  • Live Music Venues: Many restaurants and bars, especially in Positano and Amalfi, often feature live music. This typically includes soft jazz, traditional Italian folk music, or popular covers, creating a pleasant evening atmosphere.
  • Theater and Performance Spaces: The Ravello Festival is the main cultural performance highlight, displaying high-quality music and arts performances during the summer months. Beyond this, traditional theater options are limited.

Nightclubs & Dancing

Nightlife Atmosphere

Nightlife is relatively low-. Positano has a few noteworthy exceptions:

Music on the Rocks Positano

A famous nightclub carved directly into the cliffside below Hotel Le Sirenuse. It has dancing and live DJ sets in an unique setting.

Other Towns

Other towns have bars that stay open later, but they are not typically full-blown nightclubs.

Bar Scene

There are no specific "bar districts" in the sense of major cities. Bars are scattered throughout the towns, often with scenic terraces displaying stunning views, which are the main draw.

Late-Night Ambiance

Late-night entertainment focuses mainly on late dinners, enjoying drinks with a view, and relaxed conversation rather than high-energy clubbing. Many establishments present a serene ambiance for an enjoyable evening.

Pub Crawls & Events

Pub crawls are not a local custom on the Amalfi Coast. However, keep an eye out for local events or special evenings advertised by individual bars.

Local Charm & Relaxation

Evening Views
  • The spectacular evening views are a highlight of the Amalfi Coast nightlife.
  • Positano's illuminated cliffside is specifically magical after dark.
Relaxed Pace
  • Embrace the slower, more intimate pace of evening entertainment.
  • Enjoy prolonged dinners with local wine.

Booking Experiences

For activities and experiences, especially during peak season, booking in advance is a good idea to secure your spot. Platforms like GetYourGuide can be helpful for pre-booking tours, cooking classes, or boat trips.
