Qom (قم): Approximately 1.5-2 hours drive south of Tehran. A major holy city for Shia Islam, home to the Shrine of Fatema Masumeh. Transportation options include buses, collective taxis (savari), or private car. Plan a half to full day.
Kashan (کاشان): Approximately 2.5-3 hours drive south of Tehran. Famed for its historical merchant houses (e.g., Tabatabaei House, Borujerdi House), Fin Garden (UNESCO), and Agha Bozorg Mosque. Getting there by buses, shared cabs, or private car. A full day is good.
Varamin (ورامین): Roughly 60 minutes drive southeast of Tehran. Famous for its Jameh Mosque of Varamin (Ilkhanid era) and the Mausoleum of Ala-ud-din. Travel by taxi or private car. A half day is plenty.
For natural beauty, several options are near, though some are based on the season or need specific permits.
A protected area in the Alborz mountains, known for flora, fauna, Lar Dam and Lake, and striking landscapes. It welcomes hiking and nature photography. Access can be seasonal (often summer only) and may need permits. Inquire locally before a visit.
The highest peak in Iran and the Middle East, a dormant volcano. This landmark is an iconic symbol of Iran. For serious trekkers, a multi-day climb typically involves permissions and guides. Base camps are reachable from Tehran. Not a typical day trip for informal tourists.
