Types & Fares: 'Ekonomi' (non-AC, basic, frequent stops, cheap) or 'AC' (air-conditioned, comfortable, fewer stops, slightly more expensive). Economy: IDR 50,000; AC: IDR 80,000.
Duration: 4-7 hours, depending on traffic and stops. AC buses are usually quicker.
From Bukit Lawang/Berastagi: Shared minivans ('travel' cars) connect these North Sumatra destinations to Parapat. These are often more handy than public buses.

Self-Driving & Road Conditions

Self-Driving: An International Driving Permit (IDP) is legally necessary for foreigners to drive in Indonesia. Your home country's driver's license alone is not sufficient.
Recommendation: Self-driving to Lake Toba is not common or recommended for tourists due to challenging road quality and local driving styles. Most foreign travelers prefer hiring a car with a driver.
