Getting Around Kowloon

Kowloon Hong Kong Travel Guide

Transit Systems Overview

MTR (Mass Transit Railway): The backbone of Hong Kong's public transport. This extensive subway system is efficient, clean, and air-conditioned. Kowloon is exceptionally well-covered, with stations giving access to nearly every district. It's the fastest way to travel city-wide.

Buses: Double-decker buses, run by companies like KMB (Kowloon Motor Bus) and Citybus, offer an extensive network. They cover all of Kowloon and connect to other districts, including Hong Kong Island and the New Territories. Buses give a scenic alternative to the MTR, letting you see the city as you travel.

Mini-buses & Ferries

  • Mini-buses (Public Light Buses): These 16-seater vans come in two types: Green-top mini-buses (fixed routes, fixed fares, signal for stops) and Red-top mini-buses (no fixed routes/fares, faster, local knowledge needed, cash only).
  • Ferries: The Star Ferry is the most iconic. It offers scenic cross-harbor rides between Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) and Central or Wan Chai (Hong Kong Island). It is a commute and an attraction.
  • Route Maps and Hubs: MTR maps are at every station and online. Bus maps are at stops and online. Major bus termini are in Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, and Jordan. Star Ferry terminals are at Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, and Wan Chai.

Octopus Card

Highly recommended for all public transport. This reloadable a smart pass allows seamless payment on the MTR, buses, mini-buses, ferries, and many retail outlets. It often provides slight fare discounts and cuts down on the need for exact change. Purchase and top up at MTR stations and corner shops.

Single Journey Tickets

Available at MTR stations from vending machines. Cash payment for buses (exact change is mandatory, drivers do not give change) and red-top mini-buses.

Operating Hours

MTR: Generally 06:00 to 01:00 daily, with high frequency (2-4 minutes peak). Buses: Early morning until after midnight; some night routes. Star Ferry: Early morning until late evening (06:30-23:30).

Transit Navigation & Accessibility

Kowloon Taxis & Ride-Sharing

Taxis and ride-sharing services offer convenient, though sometimes more expensive, alternatives to public transport in Kowloon. Learn how to use them safely and effectively.

Licensed Taxis

  • Identification & Hailing: Red taxis serve Kowloon and Hong Kong special administrative region Island. They have a prominent taxi sign on the roof and an apparent meter inside. Hail a taxi on the street, but avoid double yellow lines. Look for designated taxi stands.
  • Fares & Payments: Taxis use a meter. Urban taxis (red) start at HKD 27 for the first 2 kilometers, then HKD 1.9 per 200 meters. Extra charges for luggage (HKD 6 per piece) and tunnel tolls (HKD 50-70 for cross-harbor). Cash is most common. Some taxis accept Octopus or QR code payments.

Ride-Sharing Apps

  • Offered Services: Uber operates in Hong Kong, with various service levels. Local ride-sharing apps like HK Taxi and HKTaxi connect users with licensed taxis. They allow booking a taxi and seeing estimated fares, adding ease if street hailing is difficult.
  • Safety Measures: Ride-sharing offers traceability through the app. Always check to ensure that the driver and vehicle details (license plate, car model) match what the app shows before entering the car. Licensed Taxis are generally very safe.

Safety Reminders & Tips

Taxi Communication

Drivers typically speak limited English, so having your destination written in Mandarin or clearly marked on a map on your phone helps.

Always check that the driver and vehicle details match what the app shows ahead of entering the car.

General Advice

Always use reputable services. Trust your instincts. Avoid unlicensed vehicles.

Rental Options in Kowloon

Car Rental
  • Not Recommended: Driving in Hong Kong for tourists is generally not suggested. Public transport is very efficient, traffic density is high, parking is very limited and expensive, and left-hand traffic rules might be unfamiliar.
  • Requirements (if needed): If you need a car, a valid driving license from your home country, an International Driving Permit (IDP), and usually a minimum age (23-25). A credit card for deposit is needed. International companies like Avis, Hertz, and Budget operate.

Cycling is less practical in urban areas.

Pedestrian Exploration

Walking Tour Options

  • Guided Tours: Many companies offer guided walking tours focusing on specific aspects of Kowloon, like food, history, street art, or particular neighborhoods. These tours provide valuable insights and local views.
  • Self-Guided Tours: Use maps, travel apps, or online guides to create your own walking itinerary. This gives flexibility to explore at your own pace.
  • No-Go Areas for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Main Arterial Roads and Highways are not suitable for pedestrians or cyclists due to high traffic speeds and lack of dedicated pathways.

Cycling Infrastructure

Urban Kowloon has very limited dedicated cycling infrastructure. Crowded streets and heavy traffic make cycling generally impractical and potentially unsafe on main roads.

Recreational Cycling

Dedicated cycling paths are mainly found in the New Territories (e.g., Tolo Harbour Cycle Track) and on some outlying islands, for fun cyclists in more open, less congested environments.

Pedestrian Safety

Always use designated pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, and footbridges to cross busy roads. Do not jaywalk. Obey signage indicating restricted access for pedestrians or cyclists.
