Crete Greece Travel Guide
Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (HER): About 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Ag Nik, HER serves as the main airport for eastern Crete. It is the busiest airport on the landmass and handles most international and domestic flights.
Major Greek Airlines: Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air (part of Aegean) run frequent domestic flights from Athens (ATH) and Thessaloniki (SKG) to each of Heraklion and Chania. They additionally connect internationally from large Cities in europe.
Direct flights to Heraklion (HER) from non-European global hubs are rare. Most international travelers from outside Europe need a connecting flight, usually via Athens (ATH) or another major European hub.
Flight frequency and availability grow during the tourist season, April/May to October. Prices for flights are highest during July and August. Prices fall during shoulder seasons. Low season means very limited or no direct international flights, with most routes through Athens.
Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ) airports have a range of facilities: duty-free shops, car hire counters, ATMs, currency exchange, cafes, and restaurants. Heraklion Airport, being larger, generally has more facilities. Wi-Fi is available at both airports.
