Exchange rates vary. As of late 2023/early 2024, expect around 55-60 ETB to ONE US dollar. Official currency exchange takes place at banks in Addis Ababa and Jijiga. Unofficial money changers carry potential risks.
ATMs exist in Jijiga but may be unreliable or run out of cash. Carrying enough cash, notably in tinier denominations, for daily expenses is prudent. Credit card acceptance applies to a few higher-end hotels or institutions in Jijiga. Cash is the main payment method.
Note: Luxury options in Jijiga are very limited. The highest available hotels would fit into the upper mid-range category in lots of other destinations.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate applies to all travelers aged nine months or older from countries with a risk of Yellow Fever. Carry it with your passport. No other mandatory health requirements exist.
Ensure your routine vaccinations are current: Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and your yearly flu vaccine.
Traveler's Diarrhea: Drink bottled, boiled, or purified water. Avoid ice, raw fruits, or vegetables unless peeled or cleaned personally. Eat well-cooked food.
Petty Crime: Theft from pockets and bag grabbing may occur, especially in crowded market areas. Stay vigilant. The Somali Region has a past of political instability and sporadic conflict. The situation has improved significantly with the integration of the ONLF into the political process, but caution remains.
