What to Pack & Bring

What to Pack & Bring

Jiangsu, China

Climate-Appropriate Clothing

Nanjing experiences four distinct seasons, each dictating different clothing needs. Layering often works well, especially during transitional periods.

Seasonal Attire:

Winter & Cultural Attire

Winter (December-February) in Nanjing is cold and damp. Warm layers keep you comfortable. Cultural dress codes generally are not strict, but modesty shows respect.

Winter Layers & Respectful Dress:

  • Thermal underwear, thick sweaters, warm coat (Down jacket). Scarf, Gloves, and a hat.
  • Cultural Dress Code: Modest dress, covering shoulders and knees, is respectful at temples or religious sites.
  • Activity-Specific: Hiking shoes for Zijinshan. Smart casual for fine dining or theater.

Footwear Recommendations

Comfortable Walking Shoes

These are non-negotiable. You will do a lot of walking, especially at historical sites and parks. Ensure they are well broken in.

High priority.

Waterproof Shoes

Useful during Nanjing's rainy seasons, notably in spring and summer.

Rainy season smart.

Sandals or Open-toe Shoes

Suitable for hot summers, but confirm comfort for extensive walking if sightseeing is planned.

Summer option.

Essential Documents

Critical Travel Paperwork

Keeping your documents organized and secure rates as a top priority for international travel.

  • Passport & Visa: Main identification. Valid 6+ months beyond departure, blank pages. China visa documentation.
  • Copies: Physical photocopies and digital copies (phone, email, cloud storage - VPN for China).
  • Travel Insurance Policy: Copy with policy number and emergency contacts.
  • Vaccination & Health Records: Useful for medical emergencies. Doctor's letter for specific conditions/medications.
  • Reservations: Printed and digital copies of flights, trains, hotels, tours.
  • Emergency Contacts: List of family, embassy/consulate, local emergency numbers (Police: 110, Ambulance: 120, Fire: 119).
  • IDs for Discounts: Student IDs (ISIC), senior citizen, press credentials for possible discounts.
  • International Driving Permit: Not sufficient for driving in mainland China. Chinese driver's license required.

Technology & Electronics

Power & Connectivity

Modern travel relies heavily on technology. Confirming power compatibility and phone readiness is a good step.

Power and Phone Prep:

  • Power Adapter & Voltage: China uses 220V at 50Hz. Plug types: Type A (flat parallel pins) and Type I (three flat pins in triangular pattern). Universal travel adapter recommended.
  • Mobile Phone: Most smartphones compatible. Phone should be unlocked for a local SIM card. China Unicom often recommended for tourists.
  • Portable Chargers: Long days of sightseeing and mobile payment use quickly drain phone batteries. A High-capacity power bank.

Apps & Photography

Specific apps streamline travel in China. Nanjing offers diverse photographic opportunities, from ancient cityscapes to modern architecture.

Essential Digital Tools:

  • Apps: Baidu Maps or Amap for navigation. Google Translate or Baidu Translate (offline pack). WeChat Pay and Alipay for payments. WeChat for messaging.
  • VPN: NordVPN or ExpressVPN. Many international sites/apps (Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube) are blocked. Install a Reliable VPN service on all devices Before arrival.
  • Camera Gear: Versatile zoom lens. Lightweight tripod for night shots. Extra batteries and memory cards. Protect gear from dust and rain. Consider B&H Photo for gear.

Data & Digital Security

Backup Solutions

For photos and documents, use cloud storage (may need VPN), an External hard drive, or a USB drive to back up data regularly.

Offline Access

Download maps and translation packs for offline use. This helps navigate without constant internet access.

ESIM Options

Consider an eSIM compatible with Chinese networks for connectivity, like from Airalo, for convenience.

Health & Wellness Items

Personal Health Kit

A well-stocked personal health kit readies you for common ailments and specific environmental conditions in Nanjing.

First Aid & Meds:

Protection & Hygiene

Sun and insects can pose challenges. Personal hygiene items support comfort on the go.

Outdoor & Personal Care:

  • Insect Repellent: For warmer months and near water (Xuanwu Lake, Purple Mountain). DEET or picaridin products.
  • Sun Protection: High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat.
  • Personal Hygiene: Travel-size toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, Toothbrush). Hand sanitizer.

Special Health Notes

Water Safety

Altitude & Motion Sickness

  • Altitude sickness is not a concern; Nanjing is not at high altitude.
  • If prone to motion sickness on buses, trains, or boats, bring appropriate remedies.
  • Moisture-wicking Socks for foot comfort during hot weather and long walks.

Activity-Specific Equipment

Hiking Gear

For extensive hiking on Purple Mountain or other scenic trails.

  • Lightweight daypack for water, snacks, extra layers.
  • Sturdy hiking shoes.
  • Hiking poles offer support on steeper trails (optional).
  • For most casual hikes on Purple Mountain, poles are not required.

Photography Kit

For keen photographers, beyond the camera equipment (see 3.3).

  • Small, foldable tripod for low light or long exposures.
  • Lens cleaning kit for maintaining clear shots.
  • Extra batteries and memory cards.
  • A versatile zoom lens (e.g., 24-70mm or 24-105mm equivalent).

Cycling & Leisure

Bicycles are easily rented for exploring areas like Xuanwu Lake Park.

  • Bike-sharing programs are widely available and affordable.
  • No need to bring your own bicycle.
  • A good book or e-reader for downtime on trains or in cafes.
  • A Modern travel bag for your gear.

Rent vs. Bring Decisions

Better to Rent/Buy Locally:

• Bicycles: Easy rentals or bike-sharing options (Meituan Bike, Hello Bike).
  • Bottled Water: Widely available and affordable.
  • Basic Toiletries: Available in local stores if you run out.
  • Umbrellas: Many shops sell them if a sudden shower occurs.

Better to Bring from Home:

  • Prescription Medications: Specific brands, controlled substances.
  • Specialized Dietary Snacks: If you have specific needs.
  • Preferred Over-the-Counter Meds: Familiar brands can be hard to find.
  • Reliable VPN Service: Essential for internet access to many sites.

Miscellaneous Must-Haves

Comfort & Security

Beyond the basics, a few miscellaneous items enhance comfort, security, and overall travel experience in Nanjing. These often receive overlooks but prove very useful.

Comfort & Safety Items:

Reusable & Regional Essentials

Reduce waste and handle local conditions with these reusable items and region-specific necessities.

Eco-Friendly & Local Must-Haves:

Local Convenience Items

Small Notebook & Pen

For notes or communication when language is a barrier.

Small Daypack

Lightweight (15-25 liters) for daily essentials while sightseeing.

Tissues & Hand Sanitizer

Public restrooms may lack toilet paper or soap.

Small CNY Cash

For very small purchases or rare instances where mobile payment is unavailable.

Items to Bring from Home

Specific Needs:

  • Specific brands of toiletries you rely on.
  • Specialized dietary snacks.
  • Preferred over-the-counter medications.

Cost & Availability:

  • Finding exact equivalents in China can be challenging.
  • Imported goods often come at a higher cost locally.
  • A good rule of thumb is if you cannot easily live without it, bring it.

Packing Pro Tips

Install and test your VPN before you leave home. This is a common oversight that leads to connection problems once you arrive.

For cycling around Xuanwu Lake, consider using a bike-sharing app. It is simple, affordable, and requires only your phone.
