Easy to Moderate Trails

Trail of the Cedars Newhalem

A 0.3-mile paved, wheelchair-accessible loop through old-growth forest, an easy introduction to park ecology.

Gorge Creek Falls Trail SR 20

A 0.5-mile paved, accessible trail to a viewpoint with dramatic views of falls and the gorge below.

Rainy Lake Trail SR 20

A 2-mile roundtrip, paved, accessible trail to a beautiful alpine lake with stunning mountain views.

Strenuous & Challenging Treks

  • Maple Pass Loop (SR 20): A 7.2-mile roundtrip with 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Good fitness is here.
  • Cascade Pass Trail: A 7.4-mile roundtrip with 1,800 feet of gain. Incredible mountain views and backcountry access.
  • Sahale Arm Trail: A very strenuous extension from Cascade Pass to Sahale Glacier Camp. Significant effort and experience is needed.
  • Road to Cascade Pass Trailhead: A long, rough gravel road is here.

Water Activities

  • Kayaking & Canoeing: Popular on Diablo Lake, Ross Lake, and Lake Chelan. Rentals are here.
  • Boating: Motorized boats are allowed on Ross Lake (with permit), Diablo Lake, and Lake Chelan.
  • Fishing: Permitted in most lakes/rivers with a valid Washington State fishing license.
  • Swimming: Possible at designated areas on Diablo Lake and Lake Chelan (water is very cold).

Adventure Sports

  • Climbing & Mountaineering: World-class opportunities on rugged peaks. Significant experience and permits are needed.
  • Backpacking: Extensive backcountry trail network for multi-day trips. Permits are in high demand.
  • Whitewater Rafting: Skagit River downstream offers opportunities.
  • Guided Trips: Available for climbing, mountaineering, and kayaking for safety and instruction.

Cycling & Wildlife

  • Road Cycling: State Route 20 is a popular, challenging route when open.
  • Mountain Biking: Permitted on designated trails in surrounding national forests (not in park on hiking trails).
  • Wildlife Viewing: Black bears, deer, marmots, pikas, mountain goats. Binoculars enhance viewing.
  • Birdwatching: The park is home to a rich diversity of bird species.

Safety Notes for Outdoor Activities

Always check weather forecasts, trail conditions, and avalanche warnings. Carry the Ten Essentials for any outing. Wildlife encounters require safe distancing. Backcountry travel requires preparedness and a permit. Water in alpine lakes is extremely cold.

Shopping focuses on basic supplies, outdoor gear, and locally crafted souvenirs. No large traditional markets are here. Artisan workshops are in Winthrop and Mazama.
