Air Travel

Major Airports & Airlines

Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY), Maryland, is about a 1-hour drive. It has limited direct flights. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is 2-2.5 hours away, a major international hub. Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) is 2.5-3 hours away, a major international and domestic hub. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is also 2.5-3 hours away, a major domestic hub.

Airlines and Routes

  • PHL: American Airlines (major hub), Southwest, Delta, United, Spirit, Frontier.
  • BWI: Southwest (significant presence), American, Delta, United, Spirit, Frontier.
  • DCA: American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska Airlines. SBY: American Airlines.

Transfers to Rehoboth Beach

Renting a car is the most common and flexible option from PHL, BWI, or DCA. Book in advance, especially for summer. Traffic can be significant on summer weekends. Private or shared-ride shuttle services, like Delaware Express, connect major airports to the Delaware Beaches.

Transfer Options

  • Rental Car: Most flexible, book in advance (see DiscoverCars.com).
  • Shuttle Services: Delaware Express from PHL, BWI.
  • Rideshare/Taxi: Expensive due to distance ($200-300+ from PHL/BWI).

Direct Flights

No direct international flights land at SBY. International travelers fly into PHL, BWI, or IAD (Washington Dulles), then use ground transportation. Check Dollar Flight Club or Skyscanner for deals.

Seasonal Pricing

Flight prices to regional airports generally increase during peak summer (June-August) and around major holidays due to higher demand. SBY may experience less fluctuation but seats fill quickly.

Airport Facilities

PHL, BWI, DCA offer comprehensive facilities: car rentals, dining, retail, lounges, various ground transport. SBY has more limited, basic amenities for regional traffic.

Land Travel Considerations

Train & Bus Connections

  • Amtrak: Closest station is Wilmington, DE (1.5-2 hours drive).
  • Long-distance bus: Greyhound connects to Wilmington.
  • From Wilmington, arrange ground transport: rental car, Delaware Express shuttle, or multi-leg DART bus.
  • Seasonal direct bus routes (OurBus) from major East Coast cities sometimes appear. Check schedules.

Self-Driving & Road Safety

  • Valid U.S. Driver's license or International Driving Permit (IDP) plus home license.
  • Roads are well-maintained. DE-1 (Coastal Highway) sees heavy traffic, especially summer weekends.
  • Parking in Rehoboth Beach is challenging and expensive in summer.
  • Prepare for delays; allow ample travel time. Consider DART Beach Bus upon arrival.

Sea & River Arrivals

Cape May-Lewes Ferry

Connects Cape May, NJ, to Lewes, DE (10 miles north of Rehoboth). It transports both vehicles and passengers. Pre-booking vehicle spots is highly recommended, especially in summer and on weekends.

Cruise Ports

Rehoboth Beach has no cruise port. The nearest major cruise ports are in Baltimore, MD, and Philadelphia, PA. Arrange separate ground transportation from those cities to Rehoboth Beach.

Connections from Ferry

From Lewes Ferry Terminal: Taxi/Rideshare, DART First State Bus, or personal vehicle (if brought on ferry). No river transportation options apply directly to Rehoboth Beach.

Departure Information

Exit Fees & Procedures

No specific exit fees or taxes apply for departing Rehoboth Beach or the state of Delaware. Standard U.S. Airport taxes and airline fees are typically included in your airfare if flying. No additional departure taxes apply at the local level if driving or taking the ferry.

Departure Guidelines

  • Air Travel: Arrive 2-3 hours before domestic flights, 3+ hours for international.
  • Car Travel: Factor in DE-1 traffic delays, especially summer Sundays. Depart early (before 8 AM) or late (after 8 PM).
  • Ferry: Arrive at terminal 30-45 minutes before departure for vehicle check-in.

Major Airports (PHL, BWI, DCA) offer a full range of amenities: diverse dining, retail for last-minute souvenirs, airline lounges.
