Vail Valley sits in the central Rocky Mountains of Colorado, approximately 120 miles west of Denver. It is a high-altitude destination, with Vail Village located at an elevation of 8,150 feet (2,484 meters) above sea level. The valley spans east to west, framed by the majestic Gore Range to the north and the Sawatch Range to the south. The Eagle River flows through the valley, joining Gore Creek near Vail Village. Vail's history begins with a vision. Founded in 1962 by Pete Seibert, a former 10th Mountain Division soldier, and Earl Eaton, a local rancher, the resort was built on the concept of an European-style ski village. Seibert, who trained with the elite 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale (located nearby), recognized the area's immense potential for skiing.
He envisioned a resort that would rival the best in Europe. From a former sheep pasture, Vail quickly grew into a premier ski destination, known for its expansive terrain, including the legendary Back Bowls. The 10th Mountain Division's legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Colorado's ski industry, as many veterans returned to establish or work at resorts. This military heritage gave rise to the design and adventurous spirit that defines Vail Valley today. The resort's swift development transformed the valley, making it a hub for tourism and outdoor recreation.
