Booking Strategies

The park's popularity and limited capacity mean that places fill quickly.

Advance Booking Recommendations by Season

  • Peak Summer (June - August): Book all lodging and in-park campgrounds 3-6 months in advance. Wilderness lodges often require booking 12-18 months in advance. Park bus tickets too.
  • Shoulder Season (May, September): Booking 1-3 months in advance.
  • Low Season (October - April): Booking a few weeks to a month in advance.

Negotiation & Policies

  • Negotiation Customs for Walk-in Rates: Walk-in rates are rare and generally not a strategy during summer. Booking in advance is always better.
  • Deposit and Cancellation Policies: Vary widely. Park campgrounds/buses on Recreation.gov have specific policies. Private lodges typically require a deposit and have cancellation windows (e.g., 30-60 days prior). Wilderness lodges have very strict, often non-refundable deposit policies.
  • Seasonal Price Fluctuations: Prices are highest during June-August, dropping significantly in May and September.
