Local Transportation

Andaman Coast, Thailand

Public Transportation: Songthaews

Songthaews, converted pickup trucks with two benches in the back, are the main form of local public transportation in Ao Nang and Krabi. They operate on fixed routes and you can flag them down anywhere along their path.

They offer a simple and authentic way to get around. Fares are fixed and depend on the distance. Within Ao Nang, expect to pay between 20-50 THB per trip. A ride from Ao Nang to Krabi Town usually costs 50-60 THB. Pay the driver directly upon exiting the Songthaew.

Features & Usage

  • Main Routes: Ao Nang Beach Road and the route connecting Ao Nang to Krabi Town.
  • Hours: Generally operate from early morning (around 6 AM) until late evening (around 9-10 PM).
  • Hailing: Simply wave your hand to stop a Songthaew. Press the buzzer inside to get off.
  • Payment: Fares are typically posted. Confirm before boarding, and have small denominations ready.

Affordable Fares

Songthaews offer a cost-effective way to get around Ao Nang and to Krabi Town.

Fixed Routes

They follow set routes, making navigation predictable for travelers.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing Options

Taxis & Hailing
  • Licensed taxis (yellow and green) are less common on the street; private cars often act as taxis.
  • Hailing from the street is possible, but arranging through hotels or taxi stands is often easier.
  • Always agree on a price beforehand, as meters are rarely used outside major cities like Bangkok.
Ride-Sharing Apps
  • Grab is widely used in Thailand. Bolt is often cheaper in Krabi. Both offer car and motorbike options.
  • Pros: Fixed prices before you ride, cashless payment for some apps, GPS tracking.
  • Cons: Fewer drivers during off-peak hours or less central areas, potentially longer wait times.

Rental Options Overview

Car Rentals

International Driving Permit (IDP) and home country license required. Major international companies at Krabi Airport. Always secure comprehensive insurance.

Motorbike/Scooter

Widely available (200-300 THB/day). IDP legally required. High accident rate for tourists; always wear a Helmet. Inspect for damage before renting.

Bicycle Rentals

Available from some guesthouses. Limited dedicated lanes; caution on main roads. Quieter side roads are better.

Specialty Vehicles

Longtail boats are essential for nearby beaches/islands (Railay, Phi Phi). Charter private or use shared services. Speedboats offer faster island hopping tours.

Driving & Walking Considerations

Driving Laws & Road Conditions

  • Driving Side: Thailand drives on the left-hand side of the road.
  • Laws: Helmets are legally required for all motorcycle riders and passengers. Seatbelts are required for car occupants.
  • Penalties: Drink driving laws are strict, with severe penalties. Police checkpoints are common.
  • Road Quality: Main roads are generally in good condition. Smaller roads can be bumpy, unpaved, or narrow.

Parking & Traffic

  • Parking: Paid parking lots are available in popular Ao Nang areas, especially along the main beach road.
  • Hotel Parking: Many hotels typically offer free parking for their guests.
  • Traffic: Traffic can be heavy in tourist areas and major towns, specifically during peak hours.
  • Motorbike Caution: Be extremely cautious of motorbikes. They often weave through traffic and may not always follow rules.

Walking & Cycling

  • Pedestrian-Friendly Areas: Ao Nang Beach Road has sidewalks for strolling. Nopparat Thara Beach is long and suitable for leisurely walks.
  • Railay Beach: Entirely pedestrian, accessible only by boat, a pleasant area to walk without vehicle traffic.
  • Walking Tours: Self-guided walks are easy. Guided walking tours are often part of larger tour packages.
  • Bicycle Infrastructure: Limited dedicated bicycle lanes. Cycling on main roads can be hazardous due to traffic.
  • Cycling Safety: Quieter side roads, especially inland from tourist areas, are better for cycling. Always exercise caution and wear a helmet.
  • No-Go Areas: No specific "no-go" areas. Busy main roads outside central Ao Nang are less safe for pedestrians and cyclists due to faster traffic.

Specialized Transportation & Accessibility

Tour Buses

No hop-on-hop-off services. Tour buses are for organized day trips to attractions like Krabi Hot Springs or Emerald Pool, including hotel pickup/drop-off.

Boat Taxis

Longtail boats are the iconic transport to Railay Beach, Phi Phi, and other islands. Charter private or use shared services. Speedboats are faster options for island hopping tours.

Accessibility

Accessibility for travelers with mobility needs remains limited. Public transport like Songthaews and longtail boats are not wheelchair accessible. Newer hotels may feature accessible rooms.
