Getting There & Away

Northern Tanzania, Tanzania

Air Travel

Major Airports

Your journey to Serengeti National Park usually starts or passes through one of these airports:

Gateway Airports

  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): Main international gateway for Northern Tanzania safaris. Located near Arusha.
  • Arusha Airport (ARK): Domestic airport for flights to/from JRO and Serengeti airstrips. Smaller facility.
  • Serengeti Airstrips: Numerous small airstrips within the park (Seronera, Kogatende, Lobo, etc.). Direct flights from ARK or JRO.

Airlines & Routes

Several airlines connect Tanzania to the world and offer internal flights to the Serengeti. Direct flight options from outside Africa to JRO are limited.

Flight Information

  • International to JRO: Ethiopian Airlines, KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines. Regional flights from Nairobi (Precision Air).
  • Domestic to Serengeti Airstrips: Coastal Aviation, Regional Air, Grumeti Air, Auric Air. Small propeller planes.
  • Transit Hubs: Common connections via Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul, Dubai, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam.

Seasonal Flight Pricing

High season brings higher demand and prices. Low season often means fewer options but lower costs.

Airport Facilities

JRO offers basic services (ATMs, exchange, duty-free, cafes). ARK and Serengeti airstrips have minimal facilities.

Airport Transfers

Pre-arranged transfers with your safari operator are the best option from JRO/ARK to Arusha. Safari vehicle meets you at Serengeti airstrips.

Flight Booking & Savings

Best Flight Tools

  • Dollar Flight Club: Find discounted international flights.
  • Skyscanner: Compare flight prices across many airlines and dates.
  • Book early, especially for high season travel, to secure better rates and availability.
  • Low season travel (April to May) often means lower flight prices.

Internal Flight Logistics

  • Internal flights use small propeller planes, often with strict luggage weight limits.
  • These flights offer scenic views over the landscape.
  • Internal flights save significant travel time compared to driving (e.g., 7-8 hours from Arusha to Serengeti by road).
  • Weigh the time savings against the cost savings of driving.

Land Transportation

Border Crossings

Namanga: Common crossing between Nairobi, Kenya, and Arusha, Tanzania. Used for multi-country safaris. Passport, visa for both countries, Yellow Fever certificate. Allow significant time for formalities. Your tour operator guides you.

Train & Bus

No train services connect to or operate within the Northern Safari Circuit, including Serengeti. Long-distance buses operate between major cities but are not for reaching Serengeti National Park directly for safari tourism.

Self-Driving

Not recommended for Serengeti National Park. Roads are unpaved, often rough. Navigation is complex without experienced guides. Off-roading is strictly prohibited. Safari vehicles are always provided with a professional guide/driver.

Road Conditions & Safety

Road Quality

Main roads to Arusha are paved and generally in good condition. Roads within National Parks, including Serengeti, are exclusively unpaved dirt tracks. Expect them to be very dusty in the dry season and potentially extremely muddy and slippery in the wet season.

Terrain Details

  • Bumpy rides are common within the park.
  • These conditions require robust 4x4 safari vehicles and experienced drivers.
  • Your safari guide handles all driving and parking on designated tracks.

Driving Safety

Wildlife on roads poses a hazard. Animals cross the roads freely. Drivers must exercise caution. Stick to designated tracks within the park.

Safety Measures

  • Night driving is strictly prohibited within all national parks.
  • This prohibition protects wildlife and visitors.
  • Always follow your guide's instructions regarding movement within the park.

Departure Logistics

Prepare for your departure to ensure a smooth exit from Tanzania.

Exit Information

  • Exit Fees: Tanzania does not have a separate departure tax for international flights. Airport taxes are typically included in your airline ticket price.
  • International Flights (JRO): Arrive at least 3 hours before scheduled departure.
  • Domestic Flights (ARK/Serengeti Airstrips): Arrive 1-1.5 hours before ARK departure. Guide handles Serengeti airstrip drop-off.

Airport Facilities

Manage your expectations for airport facilities, especially at domestic airstrips.

Departure Experience

  • JRO Departure Lounge: Basic facilities with limited shops for souvenirs and a few cafes.
  • ARK / Serengeti Airstrips: Minimal facilities. Simple waiting areas. No shops or amenities.
  • Your safari experience concludes at these points.

Car Rental Resources

  • DiscoverCars.com: Explore car rental options for areas outside national parks.
  • Self-driving is not applicable or recommended for Serengeti National Park due to complex roads and park rules.
  • Park rules restrict off-road driving and require specialized 4x4 safari vehicles with experienced local drivers.
  • If driving outside parks, an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your national driving license is useful.
  • Driving in Tanzania happens on the left side of the road.
  • Motorcycle and scooter rentals are not available or permitted within Serengeti National Park. They remain unsafe for wildlife areas.

Sea/River Arrivals

Water Transportation

This section does not apply to Serengeti National Park. Serengeti is an inland destination. It has no major navigable sea or river routes for international or significant domestic travel.

No Water Access

  • No boat taxis or water transportation services are available for tourist access.
  • Rivers like the Grumeti and Mara are for wildlife crossings, not human transport.
  • The park is not coastal or connected to major lakes for large vessel travel.

Other Unique Transport

No cable cars, funiculars, or other unique local transport systems are present in Serengeti National Park. The park's main unique transport mode for tourists is the safari vehicle.

Safari Vehicle Focus

  • Safari vehicles are designed for the terrain and wildlife viewing.
  • No infrastructure for mountain or urban-style unique transport.
  • Some luxury lodges and safari operators offer adapted vehicles and rooms for travelers with mobility needs. Inquire with specialized tour operators.

Taxi Services

Taxis operate in Arusha. Negotiate fares. No taxis within Serengeti. Ride-sharing apps like Uber do not reliably operate in Arusha or Serengeti.

Walking & Cycling

Strictly limited within Serengeti due to wildlife. Only in designated, controlled areas with an armed ranger. Prohibited for safety reasons.
