Northern Tanzania, Tanzania

Nearby Accessible Locations

Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA): Directly borders the southeastern Serengeti. It holds the Ngorongoro Crater, an UNESCO World Heritage site and a natural wonder. The crater floor presents an incredible density of wildlife. A long day trip from southern Serengeti (Ndutu area) is an option. It most often functions as a distinct stopover between Serengeti and Arusha on a multi-day safari.

Olduvai Gorge: (See Section 8.1) Within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this major paleoanthropological site often becomes a fascinating stop en route to or from Serengeti.

Travel Logistics

  • Travel to these nearby destinations occurs exclusively via safari 4x4 vehicles. Your tour operator delivers the vehicle and guide.
  • Ngorongoro Crater game drive: At least half a day. Many safaris dedicate a full day.
  • Olduvai Gorge museum and viewpoint visit: Typically 1-2 hours. Works well on a travel day.

Budget Traveler's Guide

For cost-effective travel, group camping safaris are a good choice. These often run for 3-5 days and cover Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Manyara.

Affordable Experience

  • Focus on basic amenities.
  • Meals prepared by a safari chef.
  • Most cost-effective way to experience the parks.

Mid-Range Traveler's Itinerary

Choose small group or private safaris staying in comfortable tented camps or lodges. This presents a balanced itinerary covering multiple parks.

Comfort & Exploration

  • Comfortable tented camps or lodges.
  • Balanced itinerary across multiple parks.
  • Good value and comfort.

Luxury Experience Plan

This includes a private safari vehicle with a dedicated guide. You stay in exclusive luxury tented camps or lodges.

Premium Features

  • Highest level of comfort, service, and exclusivity.
  • Internal flights between parks save time.
  • Special experiences like hot air ballooning and private bush dinners.

Value-Focused Recommendations

Smart Choices

  • Travel during the shoulder season (March, June, November, December) for lower prices.
  • Choose slightly less expensive areas of the park, like central Serengeti.
  • Opt for mobile camps that follow the migration but are not ultra-luxury.

Seasonal Travel Tips

Align your visit with seasonal highlights for a specific experience.

Dry Season June-Oct

Prime time for the Great Migration river crossings (especially July-October in the north). It also offers excellent general wildlife viewing due to animals concentrating around water.

Wet Season Dec-Mar

This period features the calving season in the southern Serengeti (late January to February), bringing high predator action. The landscape turns lush and green, and prices are lower.

Off-Season Exploration

Embrace the green season (April-May). This period presents dramatic skies, fewer crowds, and superior birdwatching. Prices are significantly lower. Be prepared for rain and potentially challenging road conditions.
