The South, Sri Lanka

Air Travel

Airports and Routes

Sri Lanka’s main international airport connects travelers to the country.

Major Hubs

  • Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): Main international gateway, 35 km north of Colombo. Most international visitors arrive here.
  • Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI): Near Hambantota, 30 km from Yala. Handles limited international traffic, mainly domestic flights.
  • Airlines: SriLankan Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, etc. Domestic flights by Cinnamon Air, FitsAir, Helitours.

Flight Options & Transfers

Direct flights connect from major global hubs. Prices increase during peak tourist seasons (Dec-Mar, Jul-Aug).

Transfers to Yala Area Tissamaharama/Kataragama

  • From CMB: Private taxi (5-7 hrs, LKR 20,000-35,000 / $65-115). Pre-book or arrange on arrival.
  • Bus: CMB to Colombo Fort, then intercity bus to Tissamaharama (8-10+ hrs). Budget-friendly but long.
  • Train + Bus/Taxi: Colombo Fort to Matara, then onward. Scenic but slow.
  • Domestic Flight + Taxi: CMB to HRI or Weerawila (WRZ). Fastest but most expensive option. For flight deals, check Dollar Flight Club or Skyscanner.

Airport Facilities CMB

CMB offers currency exchange, ATMs, duty-free shops, and SIM card counters. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival is recommended.

HRI Facilities

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) is much smaller and offers limited facilities. Taxis are available for short drives to Yala accommodations.

Optimal Arrival Strategy

For convenience and efficiency, a private taxi from CMB or a domestic flight to HRI are preferred options for reaching Yala quickly.

Land Transportation

Train & Bus Connections

  • No direct train line serves Yala National Park. The closest major train station is Matara, on the South Coast (2-3 hrs from Tissamaharama by bus/taxi).
  • From Ella (hill country): Take a bus or taxi (3-4 hrs journey). This route is popular for combining a hill country visit with a safari.
  • Intercity Buses: Frequent services connect Tissamaharama to major cities like Colombo (6-7 hrs), Galle, and Ella. Air-conditioned buses offer a more comfortable ride.
  • Many private bus companies and public buses operate these routes, varying in comfort and price.

Self-Driving & Road Conditions

  • Self-Driving Requirements: An International Driving Permit (IDP) endorsed by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) in Colombo is legally required. Your home country’s license is not sufficient.
  • Road Conditions: Main roads are generally well-maintained, but rural roads can be narrow and poorly surfaced. Traffic is chaotic; aggressive driving and animal crossings are common.
  • Recommendation: Using hired vehicles with drivers or relying on public transport is generally advised for first-time visitors to avoid driving stress. For car rentals, consider DiscoverCars.com.
  • Note: Driving a rental car into Yala National Park is not permitted; park entry requires a registered safari jeep with an authorized driver.
