  • OPO: TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair, easyJet, Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM. Extensive connections.
  • Direct flights from global hubs are generally not available to VGO/SCQ; layovers are common. OPO offers more direct international choices, notably from North America.

Flight Booking Tips

Compare Prices

Use flight comparison sites like Dollar Flight Club and Skyscanner for the best deals.

Be Flexible

Flexibility with travel dates or airports can lead to significant savings.

Consider Porto

If traveling from outside Europe, Porto (OPO) often presents more competitive international flight options.

Land Transportation

Train Connections Renfe

Pontevedra's central train station, Estación de Pontevedra, serves Spain's national railway, Renfe.

Train Services

  • High-Speed (Alvia): Direct connections to Madrid (~5-6 hours).
  • Regional Trains: Frequent services to Vigo (20-30 mins), Santiago de Compostela (30-40 mins), A Coruña (~1 hour).
  • Efficient way to explore Galicia. Consult Renfe website for details.

Long-Distance Bus Options

Pontevedra’s bus station, Estación de Autobuses de Pontevedra, sits next to the train station. Major bus companies like Monbus and Alsa have extensive connections.

  • National: Services to major Spanish cities (Madrid, Barcelona), a cost-effective way for long distances.

Self-Driving Considerations

To rent a car, a valid national driving license is needed, held for at least one to two years. Non-EU citizens must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP) with their national license.

Requirements & Tips

  • A credit card is needed for the security deposit.
  • Minimum age for rental is typically 21, with surcharges for drivers under 25.
  • Book in advance, notably during peak season.

Road Conditions & Laws

Spain has an excellent road network. The AP-9 (Autopista del Atlántico) is a major toll motorway connecting Pontevedra north to Santiago and A Coruña, and south to Vigo and Portugal. Other roads are well-maintained.

Driving Laws & Parking

  • Drive on the right side of the road. Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants.
  • Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on national roads, 50 km/h in urban areas.
  • Parking in Pontevedra's pedestrianized Old Town is restricted. Use underground car parks on the periphery (Plaza de España, Paseo de Colón).

Border Crossing & Safety

  • Border Crossing: From Portugal, the border crossing is seamless as both are in Schengen. No passport control or customs checks.
  • Road Safety: Roads in Galicia are well-maintained. Drivers should be cautious in rural areas where roads may be narrower and winding.
  • Be aware of narrow streets and one-way systems outside the main pedestrian zone.
  • Sea/River Arrivals: Pontevedra is not a major international sea/river arrival point.
  • Nearest major cruise port is Vigo (30 km south).
  • The Lérez River is navigable for small recreational boats, not public transport.

  • Once cleared, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area without further checks.
  • This means smooth travel to Pontevedra after initial entry.
