On-Island Transportation

Balearic Islands, Spain

Public Transportation System

The main bus operator for inter-urban routes is TMSA (Transportes Menorca S.A.). Local services within towns may operate separately but integrate into the overall network.

Buses connect the two main towns, Mahón and Ciutadella, as well as these hubs to major resorts and popular beaches. Service frequency rises significantly during the high season.

Hubs & Ticketing

  • Main Hubs: Mahón Bus Station (Estació d'Autobusos de Maó) for eastern/central routes, Ciutadella Bus Station (Estació d'Autobusos de Ciutadella) for western routes.
  • Tickets: Purchase directly from the bus driver using cash upon boarding. Single journey tickets are standard.
  • Fares: Based on journey distance (e.g., €1.70 - €3.50). No island-wide multi-day passes for tourists.
  • Route Information: Online timetables on the TMSA website. Tourist information offices also provide schedules.

Operating Hours

Bus hours and frequency vary by route and season. High season (June-September) has significantly more frequent services, early morning to late evening.

Accessibility

Modern buses generally have ramps and dedicated wheelchair space. Check specific route accessibility with TMSA for particular needs.

Navigation Tips

Check latest timetables, notably for less frequent routes. Arrive early at bus stops. Carry cash for fares; card payments are not always possible on board. Google Maps can provide public transport directions.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing

Taxi Identification & Fares
  • Licensed taxis are typically white cars with a green roof light and taxi sign. All operate with a meter.
  • Hail taxis on the street or use designated taxi ranks at the airport, bus stations, and town squares.
  • Fares are metered and regulated, including a base fare, per-kilometer rate, and surcharges for airport/port pickups, night service, holidays, or excess luggage.
Payment & Ride-Sharing
  • Most taxis accept cash. Some may accept credit cards; confirm beforehand or have cash ready.
  • Ride-sharing services like Uber or Bolt are not widely available or commonly used in Menorca.
  • Taxis remain the main and most reliable option for on-demand car services.

Rental Options

Car Rental

Requires valid driver's license (IDP for non-EU/EEA), credit card, minimum age (21/23). Book well in advance, especially for high season. Major and local companies available.

Motorcycle/Scooter

Widely available. Valid driver's license necessary; A or A1 for 125cc+. Helmets are mandatory.

Bicycle Rentals

No island-wide sharing program. Rental shops in main towns/resorts offer city, mountain, and e-bikes. Helmets are mandatory for cyclists under 16 everywhere in Spain, and for all cyclists outside urban areas.

Specialty Vehicles

Menorca has no cable cars, funiculars, or common public use tuk-tuks/jeepneys.

Driving & Parking Information

Driving laws are standard for Spain. Roads are generally well-maintained, but awareness of conditions and parking rules is wise.

Driving Laws

  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants.
  • Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless hands-free.
  • Speed limits are typically 90 km/h (56 mph) on main roads and 50 km/h (31 mph) in urban areas.

Road Conditions

  • The main road, ME-1 (Mahón to Ciutadella), is well-maintained.
  • Smaller roads to secluded beaches can be narrow, winding, and occasionally unpaved near coves.
  • Road cycling is possible on quieter inland roads, but drivers may not always expect cyclists.
  • Driving is safe. Adhere to speed limits and be aware of other road users.

Walking & Cycling

  • Pedestrian-Friendly Areas: Mahón and Ciutadella feature charming pedestrianized old town areas.
  • Walking Routes: The Camí de Cavalls (GR 223) is Menorca's coastal path, circumnavigating the island (approx. 185 km, 20 stages).
  • Walking Tours: Guided tours in Mahón and Ciutadella focus on history, architecture, or culinary themes. Self-guided walks on the Camí de Cavalls are very popular.
  • Bicycle Infrastructure: Limited dedicated cycle paths exist outside a few urban areas. Many Camí de Cavalls sections suit mountain biking.
  • No-Go Areas: Menorca is generally safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Exercise caution on busy roads lacking dedicated paths or wide shoulders.
  • Safety: Helmets are mandatory for cyclists under 16 everywhere in Spain, and for all cyclists outside urban areas.

Specialized Transportation

Tour Buses

Organized bus tours reach attractions island-wide, a convenient way to see multiple sites without driving. Some areas like Mahón may have seasonal hop-on-hop-off options.

Boat Taxis

Boat trips explore Menorca's coastline and reach secluded beaches. Services operate from Mahón and Ciutadella harbors and larger coastal resorts, ranging from scheduled boat taxis to full-day excursions.

Accessibility Services

Public transport accessibility has improved, but older infrastructure in historic centers can pose challenges. Specialized taxi services may offer accessible vehicles; pre-booking is sensible. Check with tourist offices for updated information.

Parking Considerations

Parking can be a challenge in popular towns (Mahón, Ciutadella) and at popular beaches during peak season. Look for designated parking areas.
