Road Conditions & Tolls

Major roads like the A22 motorway (Via do Infante) are excellent. Secondary roads are generally good but can be narrower in rural areas. The A22 has electronic tolls; rental cars usually have a transponder. Portugal drives on the right-hand side.

Driving Safety & Parking

Be mindful of speed limits. Parking in central Tavira can be challenging; paid parking lots outside the historic center are available. Blue lines indicate paid parking; green lines for residents; white lines for free (rare).

Sea & River Travel

Ferry Services

While Tavira is a coastal town, its sea and river connections mainly serve local transport and leisure, not major international arrivals. Tavira does not have a cruise port.

Local Ferry Connections

  • Small passenger ferries access Tavira's barrier island, Ilha de Tavira.
  • Cais das Quatro Águas is the main ferry terminal, located south of the town center.
  • During peak summer, a smaller ferry operates directly from the town center to Ilha de Tavira.

River Transportation

The Gilão River flows through Tavira, but there are no regular public river transport services beyond the small ferries to the island.

Leisure & Tours

  • Numerous companies offer boat tours on the Gilão River and into the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
  • These are leisure cruises, often focused on birdwatching or exploring the lagoon system.
  • They offer a different perspective of the town and its natural park.

Departure Information

Portugal does not levy specific exit fees or taxes upon departure by air, land, or sea. Airline tickets typically include airport taxes as part of the fare.

Timing Recommendations

  • Flights from Faro Airport: Arrive 2-3 hours before scheduled international departure.
  • Train/Bus Departures: Arrive at station at least 15-30 minutes before departure.
  • Reconfirm your flight or transport details the day before departure.

Border Crossing & Safety

Tavira is near the Spanish border. The closest major road crossing is at Vila Real de Santo António (Portugal) and Ayamonte (Spain), about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) east.

Driving Considerations

  • Schengen Area: Border controls typically relaxed; carry identification.
  • Road conditions are generally good. Be aware of varying speed limits.
