Exit Fees

No specific exit fees or taxes upon departure from Pakistan for air travel. Taxes are usually included in airline ticket price.

Departure Timing

For international flights from ISB, arrive at least 3 hours before departure. For domestic flights from Gilgit/Skardu, 1.5 to 2 hours is sufficient.

Airport Facilities

ISB offers duty-free, lounges, food. Gilgit/Skardu airports have minimal facilities (basic waiting areas, limited food).

Land Transportation Details

Border Crossing & Trains

The Khunjerab Pass is the highest paved international border crossing. No train services extend into Gilgit-Baltistan.

Border Information

  • Khunjerab Pass: at 4,693 meters, connects Pakistan with China.
  • Operational season: generally May 1st to October 31st; closes in winter.
  • Valid visas for both Pakistan and China are needed for crossing.

Long-Distance Buses

Overland travel from Rawalpindi/Islamabad to Gilgit-Baltistan is a common and economical choice. Various companies operate.

  • NATCO (Northern Areas Transport Corporation): Government-run, reliable, standard buses and Hi-ace vans.
  • Daewoo Express: More comfortable, luxury coach service from Rawalpindi/Islamabad.

Self-Driving & Road Conditions

Self-driving a rental car is generally not recommended for foreign tourists on the Karakoram Highway. Road conditions can be challenging.

  • These seaports are far from the northern regions and not relevant for KKH access.
  • No train services extend into Gilgit-Baltistan or along the KKH itself.
  • The northernmost train station is Rawalpindi, near Islamabad.
  • From Rawalpindi, switch to buses or domestic flights to continue north.

Public Transit Systems

Route Hubs & Ticketing

No formal route maps for shared jeeps; routes are generally known by locals and drivers. Hubs exist in major towns.

Navigation & Fares

  • Hubs: Gilgit (main bus terminal), Karimabad (main bazaar), Sost (dry port area).
  • Buses: Purchase tickets at terminals; advance booking is good for popular routes.
  • Shared Jeeps: Pay driver directly; fares are usually fixed per-person for specific routes.

Long-distance buses typically depart once or twice daily. Shared jeeps operate frequently during daylight hours until late afternoon.
