Pre-trip Review

A few final checks make a big difference.

Arrival Checklist

The first few hours upon arrival in Auckland create the tone for your trip. A quick checklist aids navigation and efficient settling at the airport.

First Steps Upon Arrival

  • 1
Complete New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD):

Complete this online within 24 hours prior to your arrival. This is for customs and biosecurity.

  • 2
    Proceed Through Immigration:

Follow signs to immigration checkpoints. Have your passport and visa/NZeTA ready.

  • 3
    Collect Luggage:

Retrieve your checked baggage from the carousel.

  • 4
Go Through Customs and Biosecurity Screening:

This is an important step. Be ready to declare all food, plant, animal products, and outdoor equipment. Present items for inspection if needed. Truthful declarations avoid fines.

Orientation & Initial Purchases

  • Locate Information Desk:

Find the official information desk at Auckland Airport for maps, brochures, and assistance.

  • Purchase Local SIM Card:

If not pre-arranged, buy a local SIM card from one of the mobile providers at the airport for immediate connectivity.

  • Get an AT Hop Card:

Purchase an AT Hop card at the airport (if a kiosk is available) or at the Britomart Transport Centre once you reach the city. This saves money on public transport.

  • Use an ATM:

Withdraw New Zealand Dollars (NZD) from an ATM at the airport. This generally yields better exchange rates than currency exchange counters.

  • Grab a Snack or Coffee:

Once through customs, consider a coffee (try a flat white!) or a snack to refresh yourself before heading into the city.

Transportation to Accommodation

Pre-booked Shuttle

Use your pre-booked shuttle directly to your accommodation.

SkyBus

Take the SkyBus for a direct transfer to the city center.

Taxi or Ride-Share

Use a taxi or a ride-share service (Uber, Ola, Didi) to your accommodation.

Confirm your chosen method and pick-up point before leaving the terminal.

Seamless Arrival

A well-planned arrival lessens stress.

Departure Preparation

A few steps avoid last-minute rushes and secure a smooth journey home or to your next destination.

Souvenirs & Shipping

  • Confirm any purchased souvenirs, especially those made from natural materials (e.g., wood, shells, animal products), comply with your home country's import regulations to avoid issues at your destination's customs.
  • If you have larger purchases or many souvenirs, inquire about shipping services (NZ Post, DHL, FedEx) well in advance of your departure. Allow sufficient time for packing and processing.

VAT Refunds & Timing

  • New Zealand does not have a Value Added Tax (VAT) or Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund scheme for tourists on goods purchased and taken out of the country. Do not expect to claim back taxes on purchases.
  • Airport Arrival: Arrive at Auckland Airport at least 3 hours prior to your international departure. For domestic flights, arrive at least 1 hour before departure.
  • Rental Car Return: If returning a rental car, allow extra time for refueling, navigating to the rental car return area, and any shuttle transfer to the terminal, especially during peak periods.

Return Trip Preparation

Final checks for your journey home.

Checklist

  • Reconfirm Onward Flights:Double-check the times and terminals for your connecting flights or your return journey.
  • Documents Accessible:Keep your passport, boarding passes (digital or print), and any required visa for your next destination easily accessible.
  • Biosecurity Items:Before arriving at the airport, dispose of any food, plant material, or uncleaned outdoor gear that could pose a biosecurity risk to your next destination.

Packing & Documentation

  • Start Packing: Begin organizing your luggage based on the "What to Pack & Bring" section.
  • Notify Bank/Credit Card Companies: Inform your banks and credit card companies of your travel plans to avoid card suspensions due to unusual activity.
  • Arrange Mobile Phone Roaming or Plan for Local SIM: Decide if you will use international roaming or purchase a local SIM card upon arrival.
  • Organize Prescription Medications and Documentation: Enough medication for your trip and a doctor's letter are important.

Final Preparations

Charge all electronics. Review emergency contacts for easy access.

This prevents potential issues at your next port of entry.
