Mongolia

Budgeting & Costs

The Mongolian Tugrik (MNT) is the local currency. Exchange rates change, so check current rates before travel. ATMs are in Ulaanbaatar and larger Gobi towns like Dalanzadgad. Major hotels and some larger shops in Ulaanbaatar accept credit cards, but cash is a must in the Gobi. US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted for exchange.

Carry sufficient MNT for your daily expenses while in the Gobi.

Health & Safety Overview

Vaccinations & Common Concerns

No vaccinations are mandatory for Mongolia entry for most nationalities. Consult a travel health clinic or doctor 4-6 weeks before travel. Common recommendations include: Routine vaccinations (MMR, DTP, Polio), Hepatitis A, and Typhoid. Rabies and Hepatitis B may be recommended based on activities and trip length.

Health Risks in the Gobi

Dehydration: The arid climate presents a risk. Drink plenty of filtered or Bottled water. Dust/Allergies: High dust levels, especially in spring, may cause issues. Bring allergy medication. Sunburn/Heatstroke: Intense sun exposure is common. Use High-SPF sunscreen, wear Wide-brimmed hats, and light, long-sleeved clothing. Stay hydrated. Gastrointestinal Issues: Diet changes and varied hygiene standards may upset stomachs. Practice good hand hygiene, drink only purified water, and eat well-cooked food. Insect Bites: Mosquitoes near water sources. Ticks, potentially carrying tick-borne encephalitis, risk in grassy areas outside the desert. Use Insect repellent.

Safety Protocols

  • Healthcare Access

Medical facilities in the Gobi are very basic, limited to small clinics or hospitals in provincial centers. Serious emergencies typically mean evacuation to Ulaanbaatar.

  • Emergency Services

Dial 103 for medical emergencies. English speaking services are rare outside Ulaanbaatar.

  • Drinking Water Safety

Tap water in the Gobi is not potable. Rely on bottled water, boiled water, or use a Water purification system or Purification tablets.

  • Crime & Natural Risks

The Gobi is sparsely populated; crime rates are very low. Risks relate to accidents (vehicle breakdowns, getting lost) due to remote, challenging environment. Dust storms (spring) reduce visibility. Dzud (severe winter conditions) livestock deaths, travel problems. Flash floods are rare but possible in dry riverbeds during heavy summer rains.

  • Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, emergency evacuation, trip interruption, and baggage loss is highly advisable. Consider World Nomads or SafetyWing. An Insubuy policy also works for visitors to the US from abroad.

Emergency Contacts

  • General Emergency: Police: 102, Ambulance: 103, Fire: 105.
  • Embassy: Know your country's embassy contact in Ulaanbaatar.
  • Tour Operator: Keep emergency contact details for your tour operator and guide handy.

Remote Response

In Gobi emergencies, your tour guide and driver are the main responders. Confirm they have satellite communication in very remote areas.

Getting There & Away

Air travel is the fastest path to Mongolia and its Gobi region. Understand your flight choices and airport connections.

Airports & Airlines

Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) near Ulaanbaatar is Mongolia's main international gateway. To reach the Gobi, travelers typically take domestic flights or overland tours from Ulaanbaatar. Dalanzadgad Airport (DLZ) in Ömnögovi Province is the main airport for central Gobi access.

Flight Details

  • International: MIAT Mongolian Airlines (OM) is the national carrier. Routes to Frankfurt, Berlin, Istanbul, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, Moscow, and others. Other airlines: Korean Air, Turkish Airlines, Aeroflot (seasonal), various Chinese carriers.
  • Domestic: Hunnu Air and Aero Mongolia operate flights from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad and other provincial centers. These flights save considerable time versus overland travel.
  • Seasonal Availability: Higher frequency and prices during peak tourist season (June-August). Limited flights in winter. Domestic flights to Dalanzadgad are more frequent during peak season.
  • Find flight deals with Dollar Flight Club or Skyscanner.

Airport Transfers UBN

Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) offers various facilities: currency exchange, ATMs, duty-free shops, cafes, car rental desks. The airport provides necessary services for travelers.

Transfer Options

  • Taxi: Official taxis outside the terminal. Agree on fare beforehand; expect approximately MNT 30,000-50,000 to city center.
  • Bus: Public buses connect the airport to the city center, the cheapest transport.
  • Pre-arranged Transfers: Many hotels and tour operators offer airport pickup services.
  • From Dalanzadgad Airport (DLZ): Transfers from DLZ are almost always pre-arranged by your Gobi tour operator. No public transport here.

Land Transportation

Overland Journeys

  • Train: Trans-Mongolian Railway connects Ulaanbaatar with Moscow and Beijing. Limited domestic services, no direct Gobi service.
  • Long-distance Bus: From Ulaanbaatar to provincial centers, including Dalanzadgad. Cheaper but slower and less comfortable than flights. Journey to Dalanzadgad takes 10-12 hours.
  • Self-Driving: Highly discouraged for foreign travelers in the Gobi. No paved roads, poor conditions, no signage, no mobile reception, specialist 4x4 vehicles needed, limited fuel stations, high risk of getting lost.
  • Road Conditions: Outside cities, roads are unpaved, rough, dusty. Gobi roads are mostly dirt tracks. Driving at night is very hazardous. Travel with an experienced local driver.

Border Crossings & Car Rentals

  • Border Information: Mongolia borders Russia (Altanbulag) and China (Erenhot/Zamin-Uud). Not directly for Gobi access but part of larger trips.
  • Car Rental: Possible in Ulaanbaatar but not for the Gobi. No Gobi agencies. Only practical choice is a rented 4x4 with driver as part of a tour package from Ulaanbaatar or Dalanzadgad. Find deals on DiscoverCars.com.
  • Motorcycle/Scooter/Bicycle Rentals: Not available or suitable for Gobi travel due to terrain and distances.
  • Sea/River Arrivals: Not applicable for landlocked Mongolia and the Gobi Desert.

Departure Information UBN

  • Exit Fees/Taxes: No specific fees charged when departing Mongolia from Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN).
  • Departure Timing: Arrive at UBN at least 2-3 hours before international flights for check-in and security.
  • Airport Facilities: UBN offers duty-free shops, cafes, and lounges for departing travelers.
  • Procedures follow standard international airport protocols.
