International Airlines

A wide range of international carriers has service, including Emirates, British Airways, Air France, Condor, and South African Airways. Most international flights connect through major hubs in Europe, the Middle East, and Southern Africa.

Seasonal Availability & Prices

Flight availability to Mauritius is good year-round. Prices increase significantly during the high season, especially December to January. For best fares, book well in advance.

Transfer Options from Airport to City

Taxi Services

  • The most direct option. Taxis have immediate availability outside arrivals.
  • Fares to Port Louis are generally fixed; confirm the price with the driver before departure.
  • The journey typically takes 45-60 minutes, traffic dependent.
  • Door-to-door service, specifically good if you have much luggage or arrive late.

Public Bus & Private Transfers

  • Public Bus: Route 198 connects the airport directly to Port Louis Victoria Square Bus Station. The fare is inexpensive (around MUR 40-70).
  • The bus journey takes longer (90+ minutes) due to multiple stops. Space for large luggage is limited.
  • Pre-booked Private Transfers: Many hotels and tour operators offer pre-arranged private transfers. A driver often waits with a sign, making arrival stress-free. Book in advance.
  • Car Rental: Pick up a rental car directly at the airport. Desks for major international and local companies are within the terminal.

Car Rental Requirements

Driving Documents

A valid national driving license is needed. An International Driving Permit (IDP) must accompany your national license. Obtain this in your home country before your trip.

Age & Payment

Minimum age for rental is typically 21-23, with some companies adding a surcharge for drivers under 25. A credit card usually secures the deposit.

Companies & Cost

Major international rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Europcar) have operations. Local agencies also provide services, often with competitive rates. A compact car typically costs MUR 1,000-2,000 per day.

Land Transportation

Train & Bus Networks

Mauritius has no operational passenger train network for long-distance travel. The island's public transport system relies mainly on buses.

Public Transport Overview

  • Train Services: No island-wide passenger train network. A new Metro Express light rail system operates in specific urban corridors, including Port Louis.
  • Long-Distance Buses: Mauritius has an extensive and affordable public bus network. It connects Port Louis to all major towns and villages.
  • Bus Operators: The National Transport Corporation (NTC) and United Bus Service (UBS) are major operators. Buses are frequent on main routes during daytime hours.

Self-Driving & Road Conditions

Renting a car has flexibility for island exploration. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road, similar to the UK. A valid national driving license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory.

Driving in Mauritius

  • Road Conditions: Main roads are generally well-maintained. Secondary roads can be narrow, winding, and sometimes less smooth.
  • Traffic: Traffic in Port Louis and other towns can be heavy, especially during peak morning and evening rush hours. Maneuvering through city traffic can be slow.
  • Speed Limits: Generally 40 km/h (25 mph) in urban areas, 80 km/h (50 mph) on main roads, and 110 km/h (68 mph) on motorways.

Road Safety Aspects

Local driving can be assertive. Overtaking maneuvers might seem bold. Be cautious and defensive.

Hazards & Tips

  • Pedestrians and Cyclists: Be aware of pedestrians and cyclists, who often share the road, especially in rural areas.
  • Stray Animals: Stray dogs or cats sometimes appear on roads, notably outside urban centers.
  • Night Driving: Driving after dark outside main towns can be challenging due to limited street lighting and winding roads. Plan longer journeys during daylight hours.

Motorcycle & Scooter Rentals

Motorcycle and scooter rentals are less common in Mauritius. They are generally not suggested for extensive travel in Port Louis or on busy main roads.

Scooter Insights

  • Traffic conditions, especially in the capital, are challenging and less safe for two-wheelers.
  • They might be good for short distances in quieter coastal towns.
  • Dedicated bicycle sharing programs are not a significant feature in Port Louis. Bicycle rentals are available in some tourist areas.

Driving Cautions

  • Traffic congestion in Port Louis is high during peak hours.
  • Parking in central Port Louis can be challenging and expensive.
  • Fines apply for illegal parking.
  • Be cautious of local driving styles.
  • Consider public transport or taxis if staying in the city center.
  • Use a GPS or reliable map app for navigation.

Sea/River Arrivals

Ferry Services and Cruise Ports

Mauritius, as an island, does not have land borders. Sea transportation for public travel is not significant for international or inter-city movement.

Sea Travel Insights

  • International Ferries: There are no regular international passenger ferry services connecting Mauritius to other countries.
  • Cruise Port: Port Louis is a popular port for international cruise ships. The Port Louis Cruise Terminal accommodates large vessels.
  • Inter-island Ferries: A regular ferry service operates between Port Louis and Rodrigues Island, a smaller Mauritian dependency. This is a domestic journey.

River Transportation & Seaport Procedures

River transportation is not a feature for public or tourist travel in Port Louis or elsewhere in Mauritius. Rivers are generally too small or shallow for commercial navigation.

Port Insights

  • Immigration Procedures at Seaports: For cruise ship passengers, standard immigration and customs procedures apply on disembarkation at the Port Louis Cruise Terminal.
  • Connections to Land Transportation: Taxis and local buses are ready near the Port Louis Cruise Terminal. This creates easy access to the city center and other attractions.
  • Many cruise lines also arrange their own shuttle services for passengers.

Cruise Arrival

Port Louis serves as a main port of call for international cruise ships, offering direct entry into the capital.

Terminal Access

Upon disembarkation, taxis and local buses are ready near the terminal, making city access straightforward for cruise visitors.

Departure Timing

For international flights from MRU, arrive at least 3 hours before departure. This gives ample time for check-in, security, and immigration.

Departure Information

Departure Logistics

There are no separate exit fees or departure taxes for tourists leaving Mauritius; applicable taxes are usually included in your international airfare. The airport facilities for departing travelers are similar to arrivals, including duty-free shops, dining options, and lounges.
