Land Journey to Ravello

Train Connections

Ravello has no train station. Closest major stations are Salerno (direct high-speed trains from Rome, Naples, Florence) and Naples. From these hubs, connect via SITA Sud bus or ferry.

Long-Distance Buses

SITA Sud operates the main bus network on the Amalfi Coast, connecting Ravello directly to Amalfi. From Amalfi, routes lead to other coastal towns, Salerno, and Sorrento.

Self-Driving Considerations

Renting a car (from DiscoverCars.com) requires a valid license and International Driving Permit (IDP) for non-EU citizens. The Amalfi Drive (SS163) is narrow, winding, and congested. Parking in Ravello is limited and expensive. A smaller car is advisable.

FCO and NAP offer duty-free shops, restaurants, cafes, lounges, and VAT refund services.

Driving & Road Conditions

Road Conditions & Safety

The Amalfi Coast's main road (SS163) is scenic but challenging. Drive defensively and be aware of assertive local drivers.

Navigating the Coast

  • SS163 (Amalfi Drive): Narrow, winding, often congested, with many blind curves.
  • Traffic: Motorcyclists and scooters are common and weave through traffic.
  • Landslides: Occasional during heavy rain (autumn/winter), causing temporary road closures.

Driving Laws & Parking

Adherence to driving laws and awareness of parking constraints are important for a smooth experience.

Rules & Practicalities

  • Driving Laws: Drive on the right. Seatbelts mandatory. Zero tolerance for drunk driving. No mobile phone use without hands-free.
  • Parking in Ravello: Extremely limited and expensive. Main paid lot near Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer.
  • Parking Alternative: Many park in Amalfi, then take the SITA Sud bus or taxi up to Ravello.

Rental Options

Car Rentals

Valid driver's license, IDP (non-EU), major credit card. Major international companies (Hertz, Avis) at airports. Small car for maneuverability is recommended.

Motorcycle/Scooter

Available in coastal towns. Requires considerable experience for winding, busy Amalfi Drive. Helmet use is mandatory.

Bicycle Rentals

Limited infrastructure. Ravello's steep hills challenge most cyclists. Electric bicycles are an option for experienced riders on inclines.

Traffic Alert

The SS163 road on the Amalfi Coast can experience significant traffic, especially during peak season and holidays. Always build in extra travel time.
