Getting Around the Islands

Italy

Public Transit Systems

Inter-island Ferries & Hydrofoils connect the seven Aeolian Islands to each other and to the Sicilian mainland. Liberty Lines operates fast hydrofoils, passenger-only vessels known for their speed and frequent connections. Siremar operates both car ferries and some hydrofoils; car ferries are slower but transport vehicles (subject to island restrictions).

Schedules vary by season. High season (July-August) sees the most frequent services. Low season (November-April) has reduced frequency, and strong winds may cancel services.

Local Bus Services

  • Lipari: A reliable local bus service routes connect Lipari Town to major settlements and beaches (Canneto, Acquacalda).
  • Salina: Buses connect main villages like Santa Marina Salina, Malfa, and Lingua, aiding exploration and hiking access.
  • Vulcano: Limited local bus service runs, often timed with ferry arrivals and departures.
  • Stromboli, Panarea, Filicudi, Alicudi: These islands have very limited or no public bus service; walking or local taxis are main. Alicudi is car-free.

Ticketing & Fares

Purchase ferry/hydrofoil tickets online or at port ticket offices. Local bus tickets are often from the driver or 'tabacchi' shops.

Hours & Frequency

Ferry/hydrofoil services run early morning to late evening, most frequently in summer. Local buses run less frequently, often with a midday break.

Accessibility Notes

Public transport may not be fully accessible due to steps or narrow aisles. Hilly terrain and cobbled streets present difficulties for mobility challenges. New hydrofoils might offer some access improvements.

Tips for Efficient Navigation

Planning Ahead
  • Always confirm inter-island ferry and hydrofoil schedules before your travel day, as they change due to weather or season.
  • Book popular hydrofoil routes early during high season to avoid sold-out services and save time.
  • Tourist information offices on main islands often provide local bus maps and schedules.
Strategic Choices
  • Staying on Lipari simplifies logistics, as it has the most comprehensive ferry connections to all other islands, making it an ideal base.
  • Arrive a bit early for popular bus routes or ferry departures for a smoother experience.

Specialized Transport & Accessibility

Unique Transport Options

  • Few attractions are fully accessible. Most towns are difficult with a wheelchair.

Local Transport Insight

On Panarea and Stromboli, in areas where car access is highly restricted or impractical, electric golf carts serve as taxis or are available for rent on specific paths.

Alicudi relies on mules for carrying goods and occasionally people on its steep, narrow paths, due to the absence of roads.
