Sumatra, Indonesia

Air Travel

Gateway Airports

Two airports serve the region for reaching Lake Toba.

Major Airports

  • Kualanamu International Airport (KNO): Located in Medan, North Sumatra. This airport serves as the main international gateway. It is large and modern.
  • Silangit International Airport (DTB): Located closer to Lake Toba, near Siborong-Borong. It has increased direct domestic flights, mainly from Jakarta. It also handles some international charter flights.
  • DTB offers a quicker transfer to Lake Toba, approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive to Parapat, the main ferry point for Samosir Island.

Airline Connections

Indonesian airlines operate frequent domestic flights to and from Jakarta, Bali, and other major cities. International carriers offer direct flights to regional hubs.

Popular Airlines and Routes

  • KNO (Medan): Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batik Air, Citilink for domestic flights. Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Singapore Airlines for international to regional hubs (Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Penang).
  • DTB (Silangit): Mainly domestic airlines (Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air, Batik Air) mostly from Jakarta. Direct international flights to DTB are less common and often seasonal or charter-based.
  • Direct Global Flights: Do not expect direct flights from major global hubs (e.g., US, Europe, Australia) directly to Medan or Silangit. Connections via major Southeast Asian hubs (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok) are typical. Also, via Jakarta (CGK) for domestic flight to KNO or DTB. (Dollar Flight Club, Skyscanner)

Seasonal Pricing

Flight prices generally rise during Indonesian public holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, New Year) and peak tourist season (June-August). Booking flights well in advance is recommended.

Airport Facilities

KNO (Medan) provides a modern airport with restaurants, cafes, shops, ATMs, currency exchange, and SIM card counters. DTB (Silangit) offers more basic but improving facilities.

Airport Transfers

From KNO to Parapat: Taxi/Private Car (4-6 hrs, IDR 500-800k), Shared Minivan (5-7 hrs, IDR 100-150k), Public Bus (longest, cheapest). From DTB to Parapat: Taxi/Private Car (1.5-2 hrs, IDR 200-300k), DAMRI Bus (1.5-2 hrs, IDR 25-50k).

Land Transportation

Long-Distance Buses

  • From Medan to Parapat: Numerous bus companies (ALS, Intra, Sejahtera) operate regular services from Medan's Amplas Bus Terminal.
  • Types & Fares: 'Ekonomi' (non-AC, basic, frequent stops, cheap) or 'AC' (air-conditioned, comfortable, fewer stops, slightly more expensive). Economy: IDR 50,000; AC: IDR 80,000.
  • Duration: 4-7 hours, depending on traffic and stops. AC buses are usually quicker.
  • From Bukit Lawang/Berastagi: Shared minivans ('travel' cars) connect these North Sumatra destinations to Parapat. These are often more convenient than public buses.

Self-Driving & Road Conditions

  • Self-Driving: An International Driving Permit (IDP) is legally necessary for foreigners to drive in Indonesia. Your home country's driver's license alone is not sufficient.
  • Recommendation: Self-driving to Lake Toba is not common or recommended for tourists due to challenging road conditions and local driving styles. Most foreign travelers prefer hiring a car with a driver.
  • Road Conditions: Medan-Parapat road is generally paved but can be winding, narrow, and prone to heavy traffic. Landslides can occur during heavy rain. Samosir Island's main ring road is mostly paved, but smaller roads are unpaved or poorly maintained.
  • Safety: Indonesian driving style is aggressive and unpredictable. Drivers often overtake in dangerous situations. Accidents are common. Always wear a helmet if on a motorbike.
