Buses (OASTH - Organismos Astikon Sygkoinonion Thessalonikis) constitute the main and most extensive public transportation system in Thessaloniki. The OASTH bus network covers the entire city and extends to suburban areas. Buses form the backbone of urban transport here.

Metro (Thessaloniki Metro): The main metro line is under construction. It holds an expected partial opening by the end of 2024. This line will connect the New Railway Station (west) to Nea Elvetia (southeast). It will pass through city center points. A second line (Kalamaria) is also under construction. Once fully operational, the metro will present a fast, modern alternative.

Ticketing & Accessibility

  • Tickets: Buy single-trip, 2-trip, and daily tickets from kiosks/mini-markets (cheaper) or on the bus (exact change). Validate immediately.
  • Hours: Most lines operate from early morning (5:00 AM) until late evening (11:00 PM-12:00 AM). Some central lines and airport express run 24/7.
  • Accessibility: Newer OASTH buses hold ramps and space for wheelchairs. Not all older buses are fully accessible. The new Metro aims for full accessibility.
  • Route Maps: Available at major stops, OASTH offices, or using Google Maps for real-time data.
