Greece
Domestic flights from Athens are frequent. International direct flights from major European cities are seasonal.
Flight frequency peaks in summer with highest prices. Shoulder season is more affordable.
Santorini Airport (JTR) is a relatively small airport. Facilities are basic but functional. During peak season, the airport can become very crowded.
Taxis are available outside the terminal. Fares to Fira are typically fixed, ranging from €25-€35. Taxis can be limited during peak arrival periods, leading to queues.
The KTEL Public Bus is the most economical option. The bus stop is located directly outside the terminal building. The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes and costs around €1.80-€2.50 per person.
Desks for major international and local car rental companies are available at the airport (JTR).
Directly pick up your rental car upon arrival at the terminal, streamlining your journey.
Booking your rental car in advance is advisable, especially for high season travel, to secure your preferred vehicle and rate.
The KTEL bus system is the backbone of public transport. Buses are typically modern, air-conditioned coaches. They provide a cost-effective way to get around.
Taxis offer a convenient, door-to-door option, specifically for groups or travelers with luggage. Ride-sharing apps are not as prevalent in Santorini as in larger cities.
Car rental is highly recommended for travelers seeking flexibility, especially for exploring areas beyond the main towns and beaches, or if air conditioning is preferred.
Motorcycle and scooter rentals are a popular option for navigating narrow roads and finding parking more easily. ATVs (Quad Bikes) are also very popular in Santorini.
Athinios Port, also known as Thira Port, is Santorini's main ferry port. It is on the southwest side of the island, about 8 kilometers from Fira. The port is built into the cliffside, and the access road is steep and winding.
Cruise ships anchor in the caldera, as Santorini does not have a deep-water dock for large vessels. Passengers are tendered (transported by smaller boats) to the Old Port of Fira, located directly below the town.
KTEL Public Buses are available from Athinios Port to Fira’s main bus station. Fares range from €2.30-€2.80, and the journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Buses coordinate with ferry arrivals but can be very crowded.
Taxis are readily available at Athinios Port. Fixed rates to Fira are around €25-€35. Expect queues for taxis during busy periods.
Pre-booked private transfers or hotel shuttles are highly recommended for convenience, especially when traveling with luggage or arriving during peak times. Many hotels arrange these services.
No specific exit fees or taxes are levied directly on travelers departing from Greece by air or sea. These costs are typically included in your flight or ferry ticket price.
Arrive at least 2 hours before international flights (JTR) and 1.5 hours for domestic. For ferries, arrive 30-60 minutes before departure. The airport is small and can be very crowded during peak season, especially for security checks and check-in.
Facilities are basic. Consider purchasing snacks or drinks before arriving if you want more selection.
Has limited facilities, including a few kiosks and cafes. It can be very exposed to the elements; prepare for sun or wind.
During high season, pre-book all transfers to and from the airport or port to save time and reduce stress.
