Crete, Greece
Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (HER): About 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Agios Nikolaos, HER serves as the main airport for eastern Crete. It is the busiest airport on the island and handles most international and domestic flights.
Major Greek Airlines: Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air (part of Aegean) run frequent domestic flights from Athens (ATH) and Thessaloniki (SKG) to both Heraklion and Chania. They also connect internationally from major European cities.
Direct flights to Heraklion (HER) from non-European global hubs are rare. Most international travelers from outside Europe need a connecting flight, usually via Athens (ATH) or another major European hub.
Flight frequency and availability grow during the tourist season, April/May to October. Prices for flights are highest in July and August. Prices fall during shoulder seasons. Low season means very limited or no direct international flights, with most routes through Athens.
Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ) airports offer a range of facilities: duty-free shops, car rental desks, ATMs, currency exchange, cafes, and restaurants. Heraklion Airport, being larger, generally has more facilities. Wi-Fi is available at both airports.

Train Connections and Services: Crete has no railway system. Rail travel is not an option. All land-based public transportation uses buses.
Renting a car brings the most flexibility for exploring Crete beyond the main towns.
Greek driving can be assertive. Watch for traffic, scooters, and animals. Parking can be difficult in town centers; look for paid lots.
Road signs are in Greek with English transliterations. Be aware of local driving customs.
Agios Nikolaos Port: The town's port is mainly for local excursion boats (Spinalonga Island trips, Mirabello Bay cruises) and smaller cruise ships. No regular large-scale ferry connections to mainland Greece or other islands.
River Transportation Options: Not applicable in Crete; no navigable rivers.
KTEL buses regularly connect the port to Heraklion's main bus station for onward connections to Agios Nikolaos. Taxis are available.
Souda Port offers bus services and taxi ranks to connect travelers to Chania city center and its main bus station for onward travel across Crete.
No specific exit fees or taxes upon departure. Costs usually included in air or ferry ticket price. For international flights, arrive 2-3 hours before departure. For domestic, 1.5-2 hours. Add time for peak season. For ferries with a car, arrive 1 hour before departure. Foot passengers, 30-45 minutes. Verify check-in with operator.
For car rentals, fill the tank with the correct fuel type before returning it. Most rental companies use a full-to-full policy, and a less-than-full return leads to higher fuel charges and potential refueling fees.
