Air Travel

Major Airports

Georgia has three main international airports serving arrivals.

Airport Details

  • Tbilisi International (TBS): Main gateway, 17 km SE of city.
  • Kutaisi International (KUT): Serves low-cost carriers from European cities.
  • Batumi International (BUS): Black Sea coast, not practical for a direct trip to Kazbegi.

Airlines & Routes

Numerous airlines connect Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and the CIS countries. Low-cost airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair frequently fly into Kutaisi (KUT).

Flight Connections

  • Prominent Carriers: Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Pegasus Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Georgian Airways.
  • Direct from Hubs: Istanbul, Warsaw, Munich, Frankfurt, Dubai, Doha.
  • No Direct: From North America or Australia. Connect through major European/Middle Eastern hubs.

Flight Seasons

Flight prices generally see a rise during peak summer (June-August). Prices also tend to rise around major holiday periods. Lower prices occur during shoulder seasons and winter.

Airport Facilities

Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) has ATMs, exchange offices, duty-free shops, car rental agencies, cafes, and restaurants. SIM card kiosks are available in the arrivals hall.

City Transfers

Bus No. 337 (1 GEL) from TBS to Tbilisi city center operates 24/7. Taxis (30-50 GEL) or ride-sharing apps like Bolt or Yandex Go are also options.

Land Travel

Border Crossing

Dariali-Kazbegi (Larsi) is the only official Georgia-Russia land crossing. It has significant delays, especially during peak seasons or bad weather.

Road Conditions

The Georgian Military Road (E117) is generally in good condition but winding. In winter, snow tires and 4x4 vehicles are often used, and snow chains needed.

Driving Safety

Local driving habits are aggressive. Livestock roams freely on roads. Visibility is poor in fog or heavy weather. Drive carefully.

Local Transportation

Public Transit Overview

Within Stepantsminda, formal public transit systems do not exist. Walking is the main and most convenient mode of transport for most local points of interest.

Marshrutkas

  • Main Form: Connect Stepantsminda to neighboring villages and Tbilisi.
  • Informal Schedules: Operate on informal schedules, generally depart when full.
  • Fares: Paid directly to the driver in cash (Georgian Lari - GEL) upon boarding.

Taxi & Ride-Sharing

Taxis have a flexible way to explore Kazbegi's surroundings, notably for destinations not served by marshrutkas. Ride-sharing apps are generally not reliable in Stepantsminda.

Taxi Services

  • Identification: Many private cars operate as taxis, often older 4x4 vehicles.
  • Fares: Almost always negotiated before the ride. Bargaining is common.
  • Ride-Sharing: Bolt and Yandex Go have limited to no presence or reliability in Stepantsminda.

Car Rental

Car rentals are typically booked online in advance or at Tbilisi International Airport. An International Driving Permit (IDP) with your valid national driving license is generally needed.

Rental Considerations

  • Requirements: Valid license, IDP, credit card for security deposit, min. Age 21-23.
  • Vehicle Type: A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for exploring beyond the main paved roads.
  • Companies: Major international rental companies (Hertz, Avis) and local Georgian companies (Local Rent).

Specialty Rentals

Motorcycle and scooter rentals are less common in Georgia, especially in mountainous regions like Kazbegi. They are not a recommended main mode of transport due to challenging road conditions.

Other Options

  • Motorcycles: Not recommended for challenging road conditions, steep inclines, unpredictable weather.
  • Bicycles: No formal bicycle sharing programs. Some guesthouses offer rentals. Roads are steep.
  • Local 4x4 Taxis: Older Russian-made 4x4 vehicles operate as local taxis for off-road routes.

Important Road Alerts
