HRG is the main airport for travelers to El Gouna, about 30-40 minutes drive south. It handles many international charter and scheduled flights, especially from Europe. EgyptAir operates daily flights from Cairo (CAI) to HRG, a connection for global travelers.
Flight frequency to HRG increases significantly during the high season (October-April) due to higher demand, with peak prices around holidays. Low season (June-August) sees fewer options but lower prices. Shoulder seasons (May, September) present a balance with decent availability and competitive prices.
Hurghada International Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 mainly handles international flights; Terminal 2 serves domestic and some international arrivals.
Currency exchange kiosks and ATMs are in both terminals. A selection of duty-free shops, cafes, and restaurants offer refreshments and last-minute shopping.
Car rental desks are available. Major Egyptian mobile providers have booths in arrivals for local SIM cards with data packages, a recommended first step for connectivity.
No direct train service to El Gouna or Hurghada. Closest major stations in Luxor or Cairo for connections.
Go Bus is a reputable company. Services from Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria to Hurghada. Economical option.
Approximately 5-7 hours from Cairo to Hurghada, 4-5 hours from Luxor. Book tickets in advance.
To rent and drive a car, a valid national driver's license and an International Driving Permit (IDP) are needed. Minimum age is typically 21-25. Rentals are available at Hurghada Airport and in El Gouna.
Roads between major cities and to El Gouna are generally paved and in reasonable condition. Within El Gouna, roads are private, well-maintained, and easy to navigate. Driving outside El Gouna presents challenges with traffic laws and driver behavior.
Motorcycle and scooter rentals are less common in El Gouna and not generally recommended for tourists due to safety concerns on Egyptian roads outside the resort. They are not widely available for rent within El Gouna itself.
El Gouna is not a major international cruise port. Hurghada has a commercial port for some Red Sea cruises and local ferries to specific islands. River transportation, like Nile cruises, operates far from El Gouna.
For a smooth departure, allow ample time for check-in, security screening, and immigration procedures at Hurghada International Airport.
