What to Pack & Bring

Central Asia

Seasonal Attire

Central Asia experiences significant seasonal variations, so layering is often the best approach.

Layering Essentials

  • Spring & Autumn: Long-sleeved shirts, comfortable trousers, sweaters or fleeces. A waterproof and windproof outer layer is useful.
  • Summer: Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Long sleeves and trousers provide sun protection. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are important.
  • Winter: Warm, insulated winter coat. Thermal base layers, mid-layers (fleece or wool sweaters), and a waterproof/windproof outer shell. Gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf.

Cultural Modesty

Central Asia is predominantly Muslim. Modesty receives appreciation, especially when visiting religious sites like mosques, madrassas, and mausoleums.

Respectful Dress

  • For women: Covering shoulders, knees, and cleavage. A scarf or shawl to cover the head may be needed at some religious sites; carry one in your daypack.
  • For men: Trousers and shirts are suitable. Avoid shorts and tank tops when visiting religious sites.

Footwear Guide

City Walking Shoes

Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are useful for city sightseeing on uneven historical center surfaces. Ensure they are broken in.

Ideal for historical sites

Hiking Boots

If hiking or trekking, notably in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and waterproof features are suitable.

For mountain trails

Casual Sandals

Sandals or flip-flops prove useful for casual wear, around your accommodation, or for short walks in warm weather.

Leisure & relaxation

Essential Documents

Travel Papers

Keep your important documents secure and accessible throughout your trip.

  • Original passport, printed copies of e-visa or visa approval letters, and any invitation letters.
  • Travel insurance policy information including policy number and emergency contact details.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) if you plan to rent a car, in addition to your home country's driving license.
  • Vaccination records and health documentation, including doctor's notes for prescription medications.
  • Printed and digital copies of all reservations for flights, hotels, train tickets, and tour bookings.
  • Emergency contact information: a list of family/friends and local embassy/consulate details. Keep separate from your wallet.
  • Student/senior/press IDs for potential discounts at some museums or attractions.
  • Keep digital and physical copies of all important documents stored separately for redundancy.

Technology & Electronics

Connectivity & Power

Stay connected and powered throughout your travels.

Device Compatibility

  • Power adapter: Central Asia uses Type C and Type F (Schuko) sockets, common in Europe. Voltage is 220V, 50Hz. A universal travel adapter is suitable.
  • Mobile phone compatibility: Most modern smartphones function with local networks. Local SIM cards are widely available at airports and official mobile provider stores.
  • Portable chargers and power banks: Essential for keeping your phone and other devices charged on long travel days, bus rides, or in remote areas.

Photography & Navigation

Capture your memories and navigate with ease.

Capture & Charge

  • Camera equipment: A versatile camera (DSLR, mirrorless, or a smartphone with a good camera) for diverse landscapes, architecture, and street scenes. Extra batteries and memory cards are helpful.
  • Navigation Apps: Google Maps (download offline maps), Yandex Go (ride-hailing), inDrive (fare negotiation).
  • Translation & Communication Apps: Google Translate (offline language packs for Russian and local languages), WhatsApp/Telegram.

Digital Security

Data Backup

Cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox) or a portable hard drive for photos and digital copies of documents.

VPN Services

NordVPN or ExpressVPN for secure internet access, notably on public Wi-Fi networks.

Wallet Security

An RFID-blocking wallet for credit cards adds a layer of protection against digital theft.

  • Pain relievers (ibuprofen, paracetamol), anti-diarrhea medication (loperamide), and antacids for digestive issues.
  • Electrolyte rehydration salts, especially for hot climates or stomach upset, aid in recovery.

Medications & Prevention

Carry prescription medications with proper documentation and take preventative measures.

Prescriptions & Prevention
